Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ERROR: List not displaying

    Hey There,

    Thank you for taking the time to look. It's appreciated.

    We have a unique circumstance where the list control isn't displaying.

    test.a5wcmp

    The unique circumstance is this:
    1. A list control is within a container
    2. The container is within a window container
    3. On initialize complete client side event, the container is hidden {dialog.object}.setControlDisplay('CONTAINER_1',false);
    4. When that container is later shown {dialog.object}.setControlDisplay('CONTAINER_1',true); the list and it's data does not display.

    The example attached points to a random table in our database, so please point it to a table you have and it'll reciprocate the problem.

    If any one of the above steps isn't exact, the problem doesn't exist. For instance, if the container isn't in a window, it works. Or if the list isn't in a container, it works. But unfortunately one of our components needs to function with the above steps which means the list isn't displaying.

    Any idea on why this happening and how I can work around it?

    Thank you

    Jane.

    Hi Jane

    I cannot help but I can show you something funny.

    List.png

    The list is confused, like you have something displacing the text.

    Worse than that it displays in the Freeform layout

    Happy hunting

        Moderators - I'm still having trouble with this. I suspect it's a bug with alpha.
        I've tried:
        -separating the lists from main comp and placing them in a separate component, and then embed them into main component. Error shows up after time again.
        -setting column widths in the lists to percentages and real values. After time, can see list titles but not list values. Error shows up after time again. Even looking at styles and adjusting it via safari dynamically, I still can't get the values to display. They're there, but for some reason not rendering correctly.
        -Start component from fresh all over again. Error shows up after time again.
        -Refresh component before viewing it. Makes no difference.

        Please let me know how to get around this.

          Not a moderator, but, how would you feel about putting this list on a panel that is not initially shown, then just issue an activate to bring it into view?

            Within same UX. Please see file.
            The button opens up the window following enabling display of list.

              Hi Clint - thank you for taking a look. Your idea is appreciated. We're currently not using panels within our project, but we certainly are using containers. I'll have a play with them today to see if that solves the problem.
              Hi Kotin. Thank you for your sandbox zip. It was helpful because I cannot see any difference to what you have done to my testcomp and yet yours works. Is there something really simple and yet obvious I'm missing? Correct me if I'm wrong, but what I can see is onitialize, hide container. On button click, show window and container. Is that correct?

                Re: ERROR: List not displaying

                The button event performs the display of the container followed by the display of the window. I created the action javascript for opening the window and just changed it to text for opening the window.

                  Re: ERROR: List not displaying

                  thanks. actually it is not a bug. you need to refresh the list after it is shown. you are not doing this

                  you need to add this code to execute after the list is shown

                  var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('name of the list control')
                  lObj.refresh()

                  in many cases alpha will automatically generate the code to refresh lists that are hidden after they are shown, but there are cases where alpha cannot generate this code and you have to generate it yourself.

                  only tabular lists need to be refreshed. free-form list layouts do not need to be refreshed.

                    This is a handy bit of information to know. How would I be able to find things like this out before I waste many hours of trial and error and error and error?

                      This is from release notes:

                      UX Component - Tabular Lists - Showing and Hiding Lists - When a columnar List is shown after initially having been hidden, the List will not render correctly until is has been explicitly refreshed. Here is how you can refresh a columnar List so that it displays correctly after having been shown:

                      var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('mylist');

                      lObj.refresh();

                        Thank you Selwyn. My previous try of list refresh didn't work because the refresh code was just prior to the container showing.
                        I'm elated because it's now working.
                        Cheers to all for looking. Much appreciated.

                          Thanks Ken for pointing that out. I try to look over the release notes but there is so much there that I have no interest in. I guess I need to look closer.
