Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

MySQL subquery select statement not working in list

    Hi,

    I have this select statement
    Code:
    SELECT Subquery.invno, Subquery.inv_amt,
           Subquery_1.comp_job,
           Subquery_2.paid
      FROM (((SELECT invit.invno,
                     sum((invit.qty * invit.rate) + invit.vatamount) AS inv_amt
                FROM jobs.invoice_items invit
              GROUP BY invit.invno) Subquery
             INNER JOIN jobs.invoice_header inv ON (Subquery.invno = inv.INV_NO))
            INNER JOIN (SELECT job_comp_terms.REF_NO, job_comp_terms.comp_job
                          FROM jobs.job_comp_terms job_comp_terms) Subquery_1
               ON (Subquery_1.REF_NO = inv.jobno))
           INNER JOIN
           (SELECT sum(pay_per_invoice.amount) AS paid, pay_per_invoice.inv_no
              FROM jobs.pay_per_invoice pay_per_invoice
            GROUP BY pay_per_invoice.inv_no) Subquery_2
              ON (Subquery_2.inv_no = inv.INV_NO)
Which works in TOAD, it produces the desired results in Alpha's SQL query builders results window, although I get this error
    Code:
    Error parsing SQL statement

Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five.
Consult your database documentation for further information.

    120 - 'line 5:11: unexpected token: SELECT'
If I put it in the lists SQL Select statement, it says it is native SQL and cannot be parsed, however pushing the preview records in query link shows the first 100 rows correctly. Preview the list and I get this error, any help please.

You could try making that a view and basing your list on the view. Then, Alpha will not have to parse the SQL.

Thanks for looking Pat but whenever I try and make a view I get an error that there is a subquery in the from clause

Don't use sub query just use a view that calls a view, Alpha has no problem with this.

Thanks Michael, never done that. Can you give me a syntax clue.

Never mind, think I have sussed it. Create 3 separate views and link them in the query builder.

Re: MySQL subquery select statement not working in list

Say I want to find the lowest price in a list of SKU with multiple records per SKU.

However I don't just want the lowest price I also need the supplier and Qty.

First I would sort the full SKU table by price.

Then I would read this into a new table.

So now I have a table where the lower the auto increment number the lower the price.

I then do a distinct on SKU and Min on ID.

Save this as MinPKID for example. This is a view.

I now join MinPKID to the original sorted table, The new view has all the data I need on the lowest priced SKU.

I save this as a view. LowSKU_Full and then access this in Alpha.
