Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Thanks to help from Pete Conway, I now realize that size does matter (at least for this stuff).
      After reworking the controlbar to set the size of the header and the controlbar to 100%, it's
      giving the results I wanted (see images below).

        Are control bars becoming a general staple of most developers apps? I have dabbled a bit, but have not really pushed my main solution to mobile yet. Curious if many here are now as a matter of form design generally using them for web based desktop applications?

          I use controlbars and viewboxes practically exclusively. Once you understand what you can do with them you just want to keep going

            The worst thing Alpha could have said when panel cards and control bars etc. were introduced was to add the word Mobile - I can't imagine developing in this day and age without the functionality - they make all applications - in all situations, ready for whatever device is going to use your application.

              On to more fun. I have this thinking that a user should never have to use the mouse wheel to scroll
              through items more than twice. Searchability eliminates that need.
              Sometimes, 2 parameters are needed.
              To do this, I put 2 edit controls on a control bar.

              Is there a method to programmatically get the values from those controls ?
              Is there a method to programmatically set the focus to one edit cotnrol from another ?

              The next obvious question would be is there a way to filter the data using [temp].state.filterA and [temp].state.filterB ?

                I still need to do some testing, but this List of ControlBar Methods should answer my questions and then some.

                  Well this post and replies inspired me to look further at controlbars. Watched Dions video on replacing tabbed_ui and I was pretty stunned at the flexibility and possibilities. Will be coding that direction for sure. Feel like the guy still walking around with the Miami vice era Motorola cell phone.

                    You're saying this to a guy that prefers a desktop phone and pc over a cellphone and a tablet (at least when I'm inside).
                    I'm posting my progress here not only to get help, but it's an easy way to find the problems and solutions I encountered.
                    As an example, my test to set focus to a different control in the controlbar failed miserably using the code below.

                    Code:
                    var disCB = {dialog.Object}.getControl('MASTER_HEADER_CONTROLBAR');
                    var keypressed = event.keyCode
                    // alert(keypressed);
                    if(keypressed===13||keypressed==='Enter'){
                    //alert(this.data);
                    disCB.focus('channelsearch');
                    disCB.refresh();

                      This should be simple.
                      I have a control bar with 2 edit fields (Search For and What Channel).
                      I want to get from Search For to What Channel by pressing a key.
                      I don't care if it's the Enter key or the Tab button, but nothing I've
                      tried seems to do the trick.
                      Has anyone else run into this ?

                      Code:
                      var disCB = {dialog.Object}.getControl('MASTER_HEADER_CONTROLBAR');
                      var keypressed = event.keyCode
                      // alert(keypressed);
                      if(keypressed===13||keypressed==='Enter'){
                      //alert(keypressed);
                      disCB.focus('channelsearch');
                      //disCB.refresh();
                      }

                        This is something I have meaning to sort out for a while and have only just realised that it works, for me, in working and live preview but not on the server.

                        I have put my search action in the Done Item action of my edit field and as I say it works in the previews, not on the server. Could be time for a bug report!

                          Try putting it in the keyup event. Use the code below to make it fire.

                          Code:
                          var keypressed = event.keyCode
                          // alert(keypressed);
                          if(keypressed===13||keypressed==='Enter'){
                          //alert(keypressed);
                          <your search code here>
                          //disCB.refresh();
                          }

                            Hi Gregg,

                            For some reason that works on the server as well, something strange that it works in the Done item action in live and working preview but not on the server.

                            I will try to get focus in another edit box on the controlbar now.

                              Curious and curiouser!

                              If I put the code to give focus to the second edit control in the keyup item action it works. If I include it in the code to check for the enter key it does not work. If I put my search code inside the enter check the search works but the focus item does not. If I put the focus code on a different button on the UX it works!

                                The only place I have issues with focus is in a controlbar. I got the check for Enter code from Lee Vasic, and as you can tell, I love that option.
                                Your observation just gave me an idea for a wacky work-around. I'll give it a try.

                                Pete Conway and Lee Vasic use when I'm going to call the star-commands(until someone supplies a better term) to filter a viewbox, but my early
                                trials show that either I'm doing something wrong, or that it doesn't work with more than one [temp].state.<variableName>.
