Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      madtowng it was your code adapted to my controlbar and edit box.

      Code:
      var cbObj1={dialog.object}.getControl('CONTROLBAR_9');
      cbObj1.focus('Edit2');
      but not in the
      Code:
      if(keypressed===13||keypressed==='Enter'){}
      So that it gave me proof of concept

        My wacky idea was to have a button hidden outside the controlbar do the .focus().
        Sadly , it failed too.
        On the plus side, that trial didn't take a lot of time.

            There's a good chance I'll put a simple UX together. If it fails there too, I'll submit it as a bug.

              New component created (attached) and submitted as a bug.
              It was created using
              Code:
              Alpha Anywhere Version (Community Edition): 12
              Compiler: Microsoft C Compiler version 1933
              Build: 8417

                Turns out it's a timing issue easily resolved with a setTimeout function.
                I will post the solution shortly after I get things settled down at the office.

                  As promised.
                  This code works with the component attached in post #36, and includes the explanation from Selwyn.
                  I've updated my video finder page to include this feature. I love the fact that I don't have to fumble for the
                  mouse to execute the search.

                  I know I forget it's not intuitive for everyone.
                  I update this site weekly to get the most recent videos published to youtube by Alpha Software and Web Dev Simplified.

                  The Search For would be any portion of the title or video description. The What Channel would be any portion of the channel name.

                  Capture.png
                  Code:
                  var pressed = event.keyCode;
                  //var cbObj1={dialog.object}.getControl('CONTROLBAR_1');
                  var cbObj1 = this;

                  if(pressed===13 || pressed === 'Enter'){
                  cbObj1.update('edit3var','eb3');
                  setTimeout(function() { cbObj1.focus('Edit2');},100);
                  }

                  // the reason you have to use a setTimeout() is that the edit controls in the controlbar are "special".
                  // they are only created when the item gets focus and you need to allow time for the edit control to be instantiated.

                    Aided by Sarah Mitchell and Dion McCormick answering my complicated viewbox question during yesterday's weekly webinar, I was
                    able to rework my search feature. It's more involved than using the star commands, but it has the advantage of using two search terms
                    to filter a viewbox. Another big benefit is that unlike my site that searches youtube for the Alpha Software and returns just the videos you
                    want, I no longer need to populate a hidden text control (I bill be updating the video finder site soon).
                    I'm posting my javascript search code as an image because I think it looks better in color.
                    Special thanks to my javascript expert and online friend that helped be figure what was causing the code to fail.
                    More coming as I make progress.

                      I have a controlbar with 2 edit items.
                      I want to use this to get search values while the user is in one of
                      several control panels.
                      Is there a way to progamatically change the watermark text?
