Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Fast copy of files

    I use Logmein Pro - it copies very fast, but it is expensive. I am looking for recommendations.

    I use ssh/rdp combination.
    It works as fast as your computer/internet will allow.

      I use RDP and a combo of tools depending on size to get to AWS.
      what are you looking to do?

        In a folder with many, many files, I want to copy those files to another computer, only copying files that have changed. Logmein does this very well, but I am looking for alternatives

          Why not use AA to copy the recently modified files to a fresh folder, then copy the files from the fresh folder ?

            That sounds very clever! Would you use file.copy2? I am having some trouble with the syntax.

            This works:
            flag = FILE.copy2("c:\a5webroot\notes"+chr(92)+"1.txt","c:\webrootcopy"+chr(92)+"1.txt",.t.)

            But this does not:
            flag = FILE.copy2("c:\a5webroot\notes"+chr(92)+"*.txt","c:\webrootcopy"+chr(92)+"*.txt",.t.)

              I would use filefind.get or filefind.get_recurse to generate the list of files to copy.
              Once you have that list, there's no reason for wild cards in your copy statement.

                I do not see a setting that will allow me to grab just the files that have changed. What am I missing?

                  format character T is the last time the file was updated.
                  The code below is not tested, but shouldn't need too much tweaking to work.

                  Code:
                  dim copyThese as C
                  dim fileDir as C = "c:\a5webroot\notes"
                  copyThese = FILEFIND.get_recurse(doc_dir, "*.txt", FILE_FIND_NORMAL+FILE_FIND_NOT_DIRECTORY, "P|N|T" + crlf())

                    Trying to read between the lines here so correct me if I am wrong: You're wanting to publish from your personal/local computer to an AWS server. Is that right?

                          I used to publish this way (more on how I do it now below) and when I did I just used RDP. Using Windows' File Explorer I navigated to the A5Webroot and simply copies the files over. Didn't take long at all. Another option, similar to Steve's suggestion, is Google Drive. Copy your local files to Google Drive, get on the AWS server, copy from Google Drive to the folder.

                          Now, each of my clients have their own IDE's. I setup an AWS LightSail server and network it to Alpha's server. Now I do all developing on the lightsail and can publish directly to production. Lightsail costs the client $40 a month. Makes things simpler for me.

                            I have been staring at the recurse method and I cannot figure it out. How would I specify that I only want files that have changed (how do I use the T parameter to specify this)?

                            This is what I have thus far:
                            dim copyThese as C
                            dim fileDir as C = "c:\a5webroot\notes"
                            copyThese = FILEFIND.get_recurse(fileDir, "*.*", FILE_FIND_NORMAL+FILE_FIND_NOT_DIRECTORY, "P|N|T" + "<br>") 'crlf())
                            ?copyThese

                            Also, I do NOT want any files from subfolders, just the notes folder
                            Gary S. Traub, Ph.D.

                              The other suggestions are certainly useful, but what matters most to me with this is the ability to capture only the files that have changed.
