Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List questions

    Hi Everyone,

I have a few questions on lists. I'm just starting out (again) with them and because I find them confusing I give up and revert back to using grids so let me ask a few initial questions and once over this hurdle I can come back with more.

    I created a list from a query:

    (1) The first issue is that I can't get the currency values to format. I go to the Fields section of the list and in the Display Format, I put the format for currency. When the list runs the format is just straight numbers. Am I formatting in the correct place and if so, why isn't it displaying correctly?

    2) On a grid I can put into the Bubble Help {Title} and when I hover over that field, the information in Title will display. Is there any way to accomplish the same thing in a List?

    Thanks

    -John

In the case of your numbers, you are formatting on the server side, but on the client side you selected ToNumber.

So it looks like you are overwriting your serverside formatting but then converting it to a number.

Instead, use the client side number display format. I think you'll find it works better for you.

As for bubble help, that is a "control" item. The list is a control in itself. You can have bubble help for the list, but not for individual items in the list so far as I know.

So that is a downside - but remember - lists were developed for use on mobile devices. And you can't really see bubble help on a mobile device anyway.

If your screen is never going to be viewed on anything but a big computer screen and you need bubble help, grids work fine. Lists have other cool features that make them better than lists in many ways, but not in that way.

Thanks for the reply. I think I followed your instructions for the format. I removed the display format from the Server Side. On the Client-Side I changed Transform Data Type to None and I entered the display format into the Numeric Display Format (I didn't even notice that originally), however, if I now try to sort on the Budget field it isn't sorting correctly. I'm baffled :)

The answer: in your list layout - select Template and use this syntax.
          <span title="{data:Lastname}"> {Lastname}</span>
          Pete
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I use my own bubble help popups in the list control all the time. You can even combine different fields to create some custom bubble help popups.

So for example, say my list has 3 fields called WEEKLYMECHQAID, CREATEUSER and CREATEDATE and when I hover the mouse over the the id field I want to display the id, the user who created the record and the date the record was created, I can do this:

            List Custom Bubble Help.jpg

In the list properties, go to the OnItemDraw under Javascript - Render Time, the code for the above example is like this (modify your code accordingly):

            List onItemDraw.jpg
            Attached Files

You can access any number of data fields in the title.
