Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Use a spin control in a grid

Is there any way to use a spin control on a grid? I don't see any selection for that.

I'm pretty sure grids will be around for a very very long time to come. Their usefulness for editing large amounts of data in one place is unrivaled.

Absolutely but all the nice stuff these days is happening in ux, I don't expect grids to really evolve but I'm sure they will be maintained.

Am I missing something. I have a shopping cart application. As such, I need data entry on the cart/grid itself, not in a pop up window or another panel. When I looked at list controls a little while back and tried to insert an editable field, like 'quantity' in the list itself, that was problematic. Is there a way to relatively easily insert an editable field in the lit itself, not in a separate window or panel?

This is where lists and grids part ways. If you want to enter data directly in the row and not in a pop up, panel, etc. grid is the way to go.

However you could probably still use a UX and simulate a grid by setting up rows of textboxes. Also going with a UX would allow you to use your spin control.

I wouldn't have the patience to create a pseudo grid just to avoid using a grid. If my app seems to need a grid, a grid is what I use.

I use lists too, but not if I want to provide a multi row editing scenario.

From what I understood is that the grid is not mobile friendly whereas the UX is very mobile friendly in terms of performance / load etc. For webapps oriented to desktop use on a pc the grid is THE tool.

The list is a better fit for mobile generally speaking, no argrument but.... I have mobile apps that for example use a grid with 45 columns and hundreds of rows, showing 10 rows at a time because that's what's needed for data capture over all their customers and it runs just fine. They click on a cell and I open a panel to edit that cell with finger friendly controls.

The right tool for the right job. Plus I missed the part where the OP said this was a mobile ONLY moment. :)

Almost all the apps I write for my enterprise need to be usable on desktop and mobile. When needed, I alter the layout for the smaller mobile footprint.
