Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Server optimized for Admin logins?

I have a question that might sound a bit strange, but here goes.

Most of my users experience Alpha slower than I do.

I tested this on a single machine, in the same browser. The only difference is the user who is logged in. And the only difference in the user experience is that I am an administrator and they are not.

In particular when I pull up a trip grid, it comes up in about 8-10 seconds (it's a really large grid with a lot of things going on) but when a typical user opens it, it takes 20-25 seconds. It is a noticeable difference.

There are certainly a few things that show/hide based on security, but the system still has to check the security whether the user is an admin or not. It can't take 10-15 seconds to hide a few controls.

I had my network guy take a look and he says the server is actually taking longer to respond to their calls than to my calls.

So, my question is, does Alpha Server prioritize packets that come from groups called "administrator" over other security groups or am I missing something?

In all the things I have learned while building my HYBRID Security Console my guess is a callback is made (each time, each field, button etc.) using the Context.Security.IsUserInRole or Context.Security.IsCurrentUserInRole - now these are not fast callbacks in my experience - the reason I say this is you can have all kinds of combinations of allowed users behind a control or field or button - it goes on... now imagine - this number places where the feature may be used, times the number of concurrent users = equals very busy server. The process is problematic and might be past it's use by.. If that is the issue.. - It's just an educated guess.

    However

Alpha now provides a local JS function option in each UX control and the Grid allows field functions (I haven't used a grid for 15 years -but I think it did) you can run the (above) xbasic-callback on load into an array - then have a JavaScript function check the array - that way it's allClient side - the server is not involved, after the initial load.

    Just a thought.

Pete, I hear what you are saying, but ...

wouldn't the administrator have to go through the same checks? It shouldn't matter whether one is an admin or not - the system still has to check their rights against the security system.

I am not saying that the page takes a long time to load, I am saying that it takes LONGER to load if you are not an administrator.

Who knows what happens - we can't see how the things are coded as we develop in AA most of the time - I know that code is some 20 years old - but I also know Administrator begins with 'A' might be a different story if it started with Z :) - just being funny - it searches through GUID's in the array - it could be anything.

I would create a UX with static data - and a call to a db to get a large image in a panel card then test that - remove as many variables as possible see what happens...also as an admin are you on the same connection using the same machine as the users? so many variables...

Yes, I am on the same connection, same machine.

I am literally on my own computer, that I use for development, logging in with the same EVERYTHING.

The ONLY difference is the security setting of the user.

And I am going to the same pages, in the same order after I login.

The admin username is significantly faster every single time.

On a UX/grid where there is very little to load, there is no noticeable difference. It's only on things that have a significant load.

As I have said, this is not a conclusive test. I just wanted to know if anyone else experienced this on their system.
