Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Stumped by an error message

I have a small web project that I built originally in 2009 that I host on my home PC. It is only used during the summer months and so has been sitting idle for a number of months. Now, when I use it, the login component works, some of the grids work, but others don't. The ones that don't seem to be getting hung up on finding one of my tables. I get the following error message:

    image.png
I'm wondering if anyone can give me any tips as to how to troubleshoot this. I've tried everything I can imagine.

This is the text of the error message if the image is not viewable:
Error opening Grid table/view: Error loading [PathAlias.ADB_Path]\nextopp.dbf: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

What version are you running and did you update anything? I am not familiar with using dbf tables and use sql instead, but is there a chance since it appears you are using Dropbox that the files used to be downloaded and available on your hard drive and now are downloaded when you go to use the file? I know this is a very common use case with cloud storage providers.
I would check your Dropbox settings first if you have changed nothing in Alpha and see if there is a setting on that entire folder to make available offline. If that didn’t work, I would test by moving the dbf files to a local location on your c drive and change the alias to point to that location instead.

Thanks for the suggestion Wayne. I am currently on v4.6.4.7 Build 8483, however I've tried upgrading and downgrading versions to see if I could shake this thing, but with no luck. All of my files are stored locally and in the same folder as other tables that my grids can read just fine. Baffling.

Might be worth checking he Dropbox recent changes to the license.
Also, not running somethng for a while allows Windows updates to screw suff.
Suggest going into edit mode - change nothing - resave and try again.

I've made some progress! I went into Web Project Properties | Design-time Properties and clicked off "encrypt connection strings", republished, and now my project seems to be working as it should. I'm not sure what I did or the dangers of doing it, but I'm in a much better place! Thanks for the tips!

              Glad you got it workin'.
Just that minor change and republish will often pick up any loose Win update crapola.
