Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FormView Calculated Field Values

    I 've got a list control (with detail view enabled) using a formview control
    , editor sets, and editors...

    When I am using an editor for a field value (Item price or qty as both use the same number pad editor) I want to update the value for TOTAL.
    This is what I came up with when I click the "Done" button in the editor for the quantity.

    Code:
    var _fields = ['total'];
    var _vals = ['item_price'*'item_qty'];
    {dialog.object}.formViewUpdate('FORMVIEW_1',_fields,_vals);
    I am getting NaN at this point so I know I am doing something, lol just not getting the result I want which would be Quantity * Price

    anyone got any advice here for this?
    Effectually this is like a calculated field value but for a formview control.

    I have already tried so many variations I am mentally numb...lol

    Note: Using the display template for the field I can get the correct total (calculation), however on sync it reverts back as though I did not actually alter the formview value for the control, as in it did not get set to dirty

      Hi Charles, I could be off target (sometimes my ignorance shows), but I'm guessing 'item_price' and 'item_qty' are being considered
      strings instead of numbers.

        Well, I am getting further along. Since the value for total is set in the template as qty * price it always displays correctly, however if I open the editor for total the value there is the original value so if I then enter the correct total in the editor - it saves as expected. So the editor gets the value from the list control rather than the formview control which would be the orginal value even though the formview control shows the calculated correct number. I got beyond the NaN value to correctly display the value as a formatted number.

        My guess is that since the value I see displayed isn't really the value of the control - I need to somehow do that after the field template calculates it and displays it. Sort of like a regular textbox control that has a calculated value but it doesn't set the field to dirty since its html being displayed there rather than setting the actual value of the control.

          I haven't used a formview yet, but I would guess if all else fails, you should be able to assign the price and qty values to state variables and do your magic with the state variables.

            I'm running around in this same circle right now. The template calculated values aren't saving back to the list. Charles, the problem with your original code is the way you did the calculation. You need to do the calculation before you put the field value in the _vals variable._vals is an array.

            My issue is, how do I pull the values from the viewbox to DO the calculation. I've got it writing back to the form view, but still working on pulling the values.

              Got it!!
              I'm calculating register totals for my POS app.
              Call the formview, grab the values, do the calculations, add the array back. I've got more to add to this, like coins, etc., but this works perfectly. Hope it helps. And yes, it makes the VB dirty and saves it, unlike the template calculation.

              Code:
              var vbObj = {dialog.object}.formViewGetViewBox('FORMVIEW_1');

              var one = vbObj.data.ONESTOTAL_O;
              var five = vbObj.data.FIVETOTAL_O;
              var ten = vbObj.data.TENTOTAL_O;
              var twenty = vbObj.data.TWENTYTOTAL_O;
              var fifty = vbObj.data.FIFTYTOTAL_O;
              var hundred = vbObj.data.HUNDREDTOTAL_O;
              var two = vbObj.data.TWOSTOTAL_O;

              var calc1 = Number(one) + Number(five) + Number(ten) + Number(twenty) + Number(fifty) + Number(hundred) + Number(two)

              var _fields = ['OPENINGBILLSTOTAL'];
              var _vals = [calc1];
              {dialog.object}.formViewUpdate('FORMVIEW_1',_fields,_vals);

                  Sure. Here's the code so far.

                  It's getting the formview object,
                  getting the formview field values,
                  calculating the bills and coins,
                  adding them together,
                  and putting them into the 3 respective fields.
                  Both for Opening and Closing.

                  Test page is at https://www.fostersrestore.com/testregistercount.a5w
                  You can play with that list entry that shows up. You can't hurt anything. There's 3 ways to enter the values. Eventually this will be a tablet app, so it's optimized for touch screen.

                  Code:
                  var vbObj = {dialog.object}.formViewGetViewBox('FORMVIEW_1');

                  var oneO = vbObj.data.ONESTOTAL_O;
                  var fiveO = vbObj.data.FIVETOTAL_O;
                  var tenO = vbObj.data.TENTOTAL_O;
                  var twentyO = vbObj.data.TWENTYTOTAL_O;
                  var fiftyO = vbObj.data.FIFTYTOTAL_O;
                  var hundredO = vbObj.data.HUNDREDTOTAL_O;
                  var twoO = vbObj.data.TWOSTOTAL_O;

                    And the calculations are on the 'Hide editor' of the editor that edits the number fields. It can also work on the Editor Set on the 'Hide Javascript'.
