Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report print to PDF has stopped working??

I have been away from Alpha for about 10 months and am now back and I have numerous reports that users can view and click on buttons (PDF, Excel, Word) that can be viewed and printed in those 3 formats or programs. It all worked fine 10 months ago but now the buttons do nothing. Printing in HTML has never been a reliable option. Any ideas on where I should start looking? I am using version 8565 5671.
    Thanks
    Tony

That was broken for a few builds. Check the release notes - find a newer build that doesn't have this problem.

I tried this build Alpha Anywhere V4.6.4.8 - 8540-5670 21 FEB-2023 (along with a couple others this morning)

      That stated the below .....

File Upload - Cordova - Amazon S3 Indirect - Fixed an issue with uploading to S3 using the indirect method when running in a Cordova app.
Xbasic - pdf_fillinfields_merge() - This function would sometime fail if the JSON merge data contained parentheses.
Reports - Saving reports to PDF in desktop applications failed.
Client-side data cache - static data - Filesystem - Refreshing a client-side data cache item that was based on static data would fail if the data was persisted to the file system.
UX component - List - Client-side search - Failed if the List was based on a SQL query that joined two or more tables.
Grid - Images - Embed in HTML - Fixed a regression in the Embed in HTML option.

I guess the process is to download/install/restart the build on development computer and the Zebra Host server, and re-publish the application.

      What am I missing?

      Thanks
      Tony

        Thanks Steve!

I found a version that partially solved my problem.
Some PDF's will now display as a PDF (correctly, as they have been for years), while others, no pdf is downloaded and the following error message is shown:
"Report did not print. Error reported was: Read past end of file."
Nothing has been changed in the reports that give this error message.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!!

          Could be an index issue.
          Are you able to reindex?

            Ted, thanks for replying!

I did reindex my tables this morning, still same error message.
            Any other suggestions?

            Thanks again

              Nope.
I believe the versions need to be the same for the build and server.
looks like no other option than to try the latest and publish again.
              A real PITA.

Ar you sure nothing was changed along the line. A 10 month gap might have memory block.

                Tony,

Version 8565 5671 is the current build which was issued on 9 March 2023 which is just 3 months ago.

So it sounds to me that since 10 months ago, someone or somehow the build you were using 10 months ago has been replaced with the current build. Do you know what build you were using?

                Alpha Anywhere V4.6.2.2 - 6945 5512 11 AUG-2020

Reports - PDF Output - Amyuni Printer Driver - You can now create PDF reports without using the Amyuni Printer driver. Previously Alpha Anywhere created PDF output by using the Amyuni Printer Driver (which was licensed from Amyuni and bundled with Alpha Anywhere). Now you can choose to generate PDF output directly (without relying on any printer drivers).
To select this option, set the report's Initial View to PDFDirect.

                Alpha Anywhere V4.6.2.7 - 7544-5564 12 MAR-2021

PDF Reports - File Size - PDF reports are now no longer generated using the Amyuni printer driver. However, as a result of this change, the size of the PDF files (if they contained images) was substantially larger than the size of the files create using the Amyuni printer driver. Now, Alpha Anywhere automatically down scales the images and the resulting PDF file is now substantially smaller.

                Alpha Anywhere V4.6.4.0 - 8000-5628 31 DEC-2021

                Change in Behavior
Report Server - Classic Server - The Report Server is no longer used when printing reports using the Classic Server. This is because now that the Amyuni PDF printer driver is no longer used when printing PDF reports, there is no longer any need for the Report Server.

                Alpha Anywhere V4.6.4.1 - 8099-5641 24 MAR-2022

PDF - Reporting - Clipping - In a previous release, Alpha Anywhere adopted a new method for rendering PDF reports that did not rely on the Amyuni PDF printer driver. As a result of this change some users reported issues where text in a PDF report was 'clipped'.
A new property has been added to the Report Editor which allows you to disable clipping for individual objects. By default clipping is enabled for all objects. But if you notice that some output in a PDF report appears to be clipped you should disable clipping for that object.
The Disable clipping property is available in the Properties Pane for an object.
                Alpha 5 Version 11
AA Build 2999, Build 4269, Current Build
                DBF's and MySql
Desktop, Web on the Desktop and WEB

                  Ted and Ronald,

Yes Ted, 10 months is a long time to remember details, especially at my age …. Just ask my wife:)
But I really don’t think I would have been making changes to something that wasn’t broke.

I have noticed that I have ended up with multiple versions of Alpha Software “developer” on my development computer and multiple versions of Alpha Software “Classic Server” on my Zebra Host server. I did read in documentation that when the universal installer came along, it installed in a different a directory. I also read that you can delete the cache for installs to be sure you get a full install.

I’m going to try to get rid of installs that I’m not using (if I can figure out which ones I’m using)
Then delete the cache and do full installs of developer and server.

Ronald, thanks for all the PDF update notes.
                  I was using 8417_5662.
I will go back and install that version and if that fixes my issues, I’ll pick out one of the versions you listed and give that a try.

I’ll post again after cleaning up and rolling back …….

                  Thanks guys!
                  Tony

So .... with the help of Earl Allen of REA INC, I'm back up and running smoothly again.

Earl logged on to my Zebra Host server and cleaned up my different versions of Alpha Software classic server software that had been installed over the years.

I emailed him by project and he tried it with different versions and ended up with the most current 8565.5671. He then found that a load balancer on my Zebra Host server was causing a lot of my issues and took care of that.

I then re-created a report that would not print as a PDF and it worked as it should.
I didn't want to have to re-create all the broken reports, so I made a simple edit, saved it and it worked. Now I'm in the process of editing and saving all the broken reports.

I have known and used Earl for over 10 years and he is extremely knowledgeable with Alpha Software. He has always been quick to respond, very easy to talk with and is very reasonable.

I highly recommend him and his people at REA INC., if you have an issue that you can't solve or maybe you're wanting a complete new project.

                    Thanks again for posting,
