Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I control text on browser tab when opening a stored pdf as a blank target?

I have several pdf documents (help documents) stored on our server and I successfully open them using Xbasic to set a session variable that holds the path to the pdf file. I then open an a5w page that has the link to open the pdf in a blank target browser window. All of that works fine, EXCEPT that Firefox opens a browser tab for the blank target and puts the name of some random pdf document as the text of the browser tab. I can't figure out where that comes from. Is there a way in the following line on my a5w page to control the text shown on the Firefox browser tab?

    Code:
    <a target="_blank" href="<%A5 ? session.doxString %>">Click to Open Document or Photo</a>
Best way to show this is with a video, I think:

You will need to specify the <title> tag in the a5w page. I pass the the text I want to use as the title in as a page variable then in the <head> section of the a5w page I use <title> <%a5w ?titleVar %> </title>.

Thanks, Frank, I haven't tried your suggestion, but that sounds like the title for the a5w page rather than the title for the blank page opened for the pdf, which is not an a5w page.

I tried it, Frank, but that doesn't work. Is just title of the a5w window itself. I am trying to figure out how to control the title on the Firefox tab that opens my pdf. It seems like that would be put in the line of code I showed above. That line is ON my a5w page to open the pdf.

Btw, I don't need to have the pdf title on that Firefox tab. It can just be CHS Help Document, so I don't need to set a variable for that.

Sorry I misunderstood the question. See if this helps. I went through the same problem that you are having a while back. I was able to use action javascript to make it work. Here is the link. Look at message 11 and above.

Thanks Frank. I think I'm a little too brain dead to comprehend the info in that thread. I am just interested whether or not there is a way to put a title or something in the line of code I showed that would show up on that browser tab. Was also wondering if anyone knew where Firefox gets those browser tab titles from. If you watch the video I posted, you'll see why I'm asking.

Re: How do I control text on browser tab when opening a stored pdf as a blank target?

Hi Carol. The title comes from an HTML title tag in the page that is displayed. If you look with a debugger the title tag gets redefined in a couple of places in code.

I had to change from opening the pdf from a file link to opening them from action JavaScript then I was able to specify a meaningful title.

I am trying to find the specific method I used. I am not doing it that way any longer I am now using panels for most things.

I apologize. I can't find the examples of the way I did it and I can't seem to pull any recollection from memory. Every time I learn new Alpha things old things are falling out. I hope I have not confused things too much for you.

Thanks so much, Frank. Your generous explanation helped me comprehend some things. Unfortunately, my pdfs are not in the web root. Although I first use Session.SaveFileToSessionFile function to copy the file, then my session variable that's passed in to point to the copied file uses Session.FormatFileDataURL function. Sooo. Is that copy of the file now in the web root? I'll have to investigate.

Update - I have discovered the solution to my issue. I tried using a tool in my Adobe Acrobat Pro to 'Prepare For Distribution' and part of the process was to remove meta data. I have to do this for each pdf document, but it has taken care of getting Firefox tab to show the correct file name of the pdf in the browser tab. I'm not sure how the meta data with the one file name that kept showing is getting into my pdf's in the first place, but, anyway... things are good.
