Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CKEditor endorsement

    Regular readers of this forum have probably run across Steve Wood's accolades for CKEditor, and maybe the fact that you can get an integration of CKEditor for Alpha from AlphaToGo.

    Well, I never paid a lot of attention to this until too many users complained too much about all the problems of pasting from Word into Alpha's built-in HTML editor. If you take a look at all the stuff coming in from a Word document paste, you'll see that it's pretty unmanageable.

    So, we went ahead and got the integration from AlphatoGo, and have now implemented it in key places in my biggest app. The rest of the team loves this, and our users are sending us thanks for having made the upgrade. We've taken it further and added in the CKEditor feature of being able to paste in images as well.

    This is very very nice stuff, relatively easy to install, and very easy to modify thanks to the fact that, well, it's CKEditor.

    So, recommended without hesitation - a great way to upgrade your site if you have/need an HTML editor.

    Agreed! I've used it for years and would not give it up! It is robust and works flawlessly. Also has some great plug in features. Highly recommended.

      How do we integrate CKEditor on a list control? say the list control has a single field called "NoticeToAllUsers". I want to be able to use CKEditor so that when I edit the Announcement textbox then it would open up the CKEditor, How do I do this? Thanks!

        Steve and Pat,
        Are you using CKEditor in a UX? Years ago I found that it worked fine for me in a grid but had issues in a UX and so stopped using it. However, I liked what it did and if it works seamlessly in a UX I am willing to try again.

          Yes, it works in a UX. Here's a picture of one of ours in use

          This was done for me by Scott at Earl Allin, [email protected], so I can't take credit.

            Hi Pat,

            My memory was that an issue was that changes to the memo field did not make the UX dirty.

            Another issue was font sizes in px rather than pt which people are more used to, so 10pt is 13px. This created problems when the user printed because it was not WYSIWYG and what users expected.

              CKEditor is highly configurable. I believe all of the issues mentioned can be fixed either within CKEditor code itself or on the Alpha side. I didn't see a reply from Steve Wood yet on this post, be he may have already addressed these concerns.

                Re: CKEditor endorsement

                I installed Steve Wood's CKEditor Integration tool. I have it working in a test UX.

                I am struggling with how to update the CKeditor object when navigating between records.

                I have a Text Area control named CKeditor. It is bound to a field (data type varchar) named ckEditor in a MySQL table.

                Using Steve's code, a ckinstance is applied to my CKeditor control.

                Code:
                if(window.location.protocol.indexOf("http")>=0) {
                ckInstance('DIALOG2','CKEDITOR','{Dialog.ComponentName}','Basic','475','200');
                }
                When the UX is opened, the CK Editor displays the text from the first record. So far so good.

                But on navigation, even though the underlying Text Area updates it's value from the table, the CK Edtor does not update.

                Does anyone have some method for doing this?
