Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Geocoding "Location" field

I am going in circles trying to figure out how to fill the location field. Selwyn's video (http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...g_Geocode1.swf) shows him with a field type "geography" which I cannot find. I am able to retrieve latitude and longitude from an address just fine. I am running:

    Alpha Anywhere v. 3.5
    Developer Edition
    Ver 12.3, Build 2999
    Build 4519

BTW - I am developing this as a web app

What am I missing? Am I looking in the wrong places?

    Thanks in advance ... Mike

      Re: Geocoding "Location" field

I believe the videos are showing a MySQL Field Type of 'geometry' for the field named Location. In SQL Server that field type is 'geography'. You only have to tell Alpha which field you've set up (e.g. Location) with that specific field type and Alpha updates it.

These images should get you going. There are several ways.

            Re: Geocoding "Location" field

Thanks Pete - I see what you are doing but I still don't get the designation "geography" as a type. I went back and started another workspace and under tools I selected "Create SQL Table ...". I go right into creating the table from there following the Alpha defaults. Am I doing something wrong or am I missing a step?

This is the first time I have tried to establish a "location" field. The example you show in the 3rd sample do not match what I am seeing.

            Thanks again

              Re: Geocoding "Location" field

Mike... the SQL Table create process in Alpha doesn't give you access to the all the field types.

You're using MySQL or SQL Server, you haven't said which. Regardless, you'll need to create or edit your table using MySQL Workbench or SQL Server Management Studio.

Or... get Navicat and make things easy for yourself.

Once directly in your sql management process you can create/edit your table and use the Geometry field type.

                Re: Geocoding "Location" field

thank you - I really appreciate your input. I'll definitely look into those. I don't know which Alpha defaults to (SQL or MySQL) so I guess my next question will be "Which Navicat would you recommend)? Second question is - which does Alpha default to?

Cost wise I would like to be able the MySQL or SQLite version but don't know if that will be what I need with Alpha. If you recommend the SQL would the SQLite be adequate (I don't know enough to know what it is missing vs the full version.

                Many thanks again

                  Re: Geocoding "Location" field

Not sure what version of SQL you are using but MS SQL 2005 does not support the geometry/geography field types, whereas MS SQL 2008 and up does.
When I developed my app years ago, I was using MS SQL 2005 so ended up using nvarchar for the geography (location) field and that worked fine.

What you want is MySQL or SQL Server Express 2014. Both are free. SQLite is a different product. Alpha doesn't default to either... it's your choice. Sometime I feel MySQL is a bit easer to deal with, but really either is fine. Many are using MariaDB, Firebird and other variations. Stick to MySQL or SQL Server Express and you'll be fine.
