Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated field in report

    Hey There

    We have a report that is linked to a table in the database.
    One of the fields is a richtext and has placeholders within that text.

    eg

    "<b>blah</b> blah blah blah [[Placeholder]] yep yep yep yep [Placeholder2]]"

    On the report we need to the formatting of the text to be displayed, as well as the placeholder content.

    What we have tried is report init event however we didn't know how to load the table.fieldvalue into a variable so we could modify it.

    Then we tried using calculated expressions however they only seem to work for some of the records in the table and there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which placeholders were replaced and which weren't.

    The calculated expressions we used were:
    ReplaceTextContentStep1 = STRWORDTRAN(lu_text_content,"[[Business.Name]]","yes yes yes")
    ReplaceTextContentStep2 = STRWORDTRAN(calc->ReplaceTextContentStep1,"[[Person.Name]]","no no no")
    ReplaceTextContent_Finished = printHTML(calc->ReplaceTextContentStep2)

    The field in the report used the calculated expression ReplaceTextContent_Finished

    Any ideas on why it only works sometimes or what we're missing?

    Thank you

    Jane.

    Re: Calculated field in report

    the solution:
    STRTRAN_MULTI(lu_text_content,"[[Business.Name]]"+crlf()+"[[Person.Name]]"+crlf(),"BUSINESSNAME"+crlf()+"PERSONNAME"+crlf())

    For some reason the STRWORDTRAN didn't replace all occurances of the text, whereas STRTRAN_MULTI does.

    Cheers.

      Hi Jane,

      You never mentioned which database it is. If you are using MS SQL or MySQL I would create all calculated fields in the back end and not in the report. This way you are getting a much better performance.

        Hi DoronF,
        Thank you for replying and I apologize for the late response.
        I'm happy to do this calculations on mysql side - do you mind sharing how you would do calculations such as printHTML(calc->Replacepolicycontent_Finished)?
        All others I can do on mysql but this one I'm doubtful I can and I just want to double check this theory.
        Thank you
        Jane.

          Re: Calculated field in report

          Hello Jane,

          printHTML() is an Alpha AnyWhere function, so there is no way to create any computed column in this scenario. You can create calculations between table's fields and use MySQL functions to handle just that. Such as: string manipulation or any finance calculation if need be.
