Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update multiple records at once

    Hello,

I have a table with multiple related records that need to show up as one record in the ux component. As an example: I have a table called users and then a related table with rows for each user characteristic (such as name, number, etc.). The characteristic is one column and the data for that characteristic is another column. I need my form to treat each row as a field to be edited and then submitted once. I hope this makes sense. I can't make the characteristics columns because that will mess up other stuff which is out of my control.

    So...

    Table 1:

    Primary id: userID
    field: username (character)

    Table 2:

    foreignkey: userID
    field: characteristic (character)
    field2: char_value (longtext)

If there are say 5 characteristics for this user, I need them to be able to edit all of them at once and then submit.

Re: Update multiple records at once

just looking at the example you have posted, that does not look good.
this is the way to do:
    table1
primary_id: integer auto increment ( will hold user id)
    field: username

    table 2
    primaryIdL integer auto increment
table_1_id: integer (fk refer back to table 1)
    other fields
    table 3..N
    primaryIdL integer auto increment
table_1_id: integer (fk refer back to table 1)
    other fields
then you can fashion your dialog/ux and incorporate all the tables and update in one shot.

      Hi GGandhi,

Thanks for the reply. However, it doesn't address my issue. The two table design I mentioned is just an example of what could be used. Adding a third table doesn't solve the issue I'm trying to deal with. I'm trying to figure out how to fashion the dialogue so that it can handle several rows as one so that users don't have to update each characteristic individually. It needs to work like a normal form would with multiple fields. The user updates each and then hits submit.

i am not sure you read the reply properly.
if the related tables have their own primary id and the foreign key field separate then you can do what you want to do.
the example i gave says that.
i did not say add a third table you misunderstood the construct. it says table 2, then table 3..N. meaning you can have as many tables you like.
if you want to see how the construct is done please see the examples they gave
        customer with multiple address
invoice example. ( with or without repeating sections as you desire)

Re: Update multiple records at once

          Hey gandhi,

Thank you for the reply. This isn't quite what I want to do, and I wasn't clear enough, and I'm sorry for that. It is close, and I can see why you pointed me to it. If I do it the way you recommend I don't have control over the layout of the form (except that the repeating section would always be the same). It just appears as a list to the customer. I need to be able to lay it out more like a form rather than a repeating section. For example, I want to have, say, 10 fields available on a form, laid out in a particular order, and if the customer just uses 7 of them, then only the first 7 are shown. But, I need it to look like a normal form rather than a repeating section. And it needs to populate the label from the characteristic and the fillable form field from the value column. If I was doing this programmatically with something I'm more familiar with (such as Access or VBScript, etc.) it wouldn't be difficult. Maybe this would take some xbasic to get it right, but I'm not familiar with that enough at this point. I'm still getting used to Alpha.

You've given me some thoughts. Maybe what I can do is some sort of custom form layout using placecodes, then wrap the placecodes (or whole html sections) in "if...then" statements. That is what I'd do in a platform I'm more familiar with. Hmmm, anymore thoughts are appreciated.

all those not necessary if I read your first post correctly.
post back what your tables contain, example tables enough.
I will post a screencast by this evening or tomorrow am to show how it is done.

Sean, I think this is what you have in mind. Your mention of Access and VBA indicates that you realize this would have to be done in code... since you want to control labels and data.

If this is close to what you're thinking, then I'll post the component and add in the data update part.
