Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Inconsistent updates when using insert,update javascript within UX component

    Hello all,

    I have a feeling my issue is due to my lack of knowledge....

    Basically I have javascript action procedures to basically perform a combination of lookup and update functions. They all work fine individually but when I try to combine all the functions and wrap into one button click, they tend to inconstently work. It actually almost seems to run out of sequence, as if subsequent javascript fire prematurely before earlier ones work.

    Not sure if this issue makes sense, but I'm almost thinking I need to add some sort of delay in between javascripts?

    For your reference, below is a list of javascripts, which again, work individually but when I combine they inconsisetently work

    {dialog.object}.runAction('CreateTriggerID');

    {dialog.object}.runAction('SendNewRecordToArchive');

    {dialog.object}.runAction('RetriveNewlyCreatedCustDocID');

    {dialog.object}.runAction('UpdateSaveProfileInfoForNewCustomer');

    {dialog.object}.runAction('SendNewLogInformationForNewCustomer');

    Please advise.

    Thank you, Casey

    Javascript is asynchronous by nature. Your second, and subsequent actions will possibly start to run before the first is complete. If you're calling all these from a button then you have a couple of options (which are essentally the same solution). Alpha has implemented a function called A5.executeThisThenThat().

    You can set up an Action to run all these actions. One of the options for Action Javascript (bottom right) is a checkbox labelled Run Actions Synchronously. To see what this does, add a couple of actions and then click the Text Mode radio button which will convert your actions to Javascript code. You'll see how Alpha implements the A5.executeThisThenThat function on your actions.

    Click the "Explain" button for some good info.

    Once you understand how the A5.executeThisThenThat function works, you can set it up in your button event for all your actions instead of calling another action.

    If these actions are always called together then you could create Javascript functions to replace the Actions. At the return of each function, call the next required function. This way you get a chain.

      Thank you David, that sounds like that is what I'm missing.

      If you could be so kind to post an example of where I would place that clause? Just for sake of time... I'm away at Disneyland with my kids right now, but when I get home need to finish this project for my company.

      Thanks much!

        David, just wanted to let you know, I was able to figure out how & where to use the "Run Actions Synchronously" option and it worked flawlessly!!

        Man, this is big time for me right now in this stage of my Alpha "growing pains", coming from a 15+ years of Microsoft Access programming.

        Thank you again so much for your detailed explanation for me!

        Have a good one.

          Good to hear. After many years of mainframe databases and then PCDOS databases I added Access when version 1 came out and it was a staple for many, many years. It's just not quite there any longer.

            Re: Inconsistent updates when using insert,update javascript within UX component

            David perhaps you could provide a recommendation for something similar. I use the Google Map as an alternate view, and I have the option to move the markers checked and I have used the default function as per the prototype supplied. The issue is you MUST click the marker and make sure the row has focus THEN drag and it updates. If you simply grab the marker and move it in a single action the previous row which still has focus moves. If no row has been selected, for instance this would be your first "drag" action - NO row has focus and even though the marker is moved if you hit refresh, the marker was never moved.
            My code looks like this:
            Code:
            function newcords(m, e){var lat = m.position.lat();
            var lng = m.position.lng();
            var selectedRow = {grid.object}.getSelectedRow();
            {grid.object}.setValue('G','LAT',selectedRow,lat);
            {grid.object}.setValue('G','LON',selectedRow,lng);

            var lat1 = m.position.lat();
            var lng1 = m.position.lng();

            {grid.object}.setValue('D','LAT',lat1);
            {grid.object}.setValue('D','LON',lng1);
            {grid.Object}.submitDetailView();

            }
            Notice the Submit part, I feel like its not the on-click that fires the code but rather the on-release because if you click the marker - the row gets focus - you move the marker and record submits and is as expected - but on the other hand click and drag at the same time, as a single effort -- the row gets focus on release but the coordinates stay the same as the row does not get focus until after the move.

            Thoughts on that anyone?
