Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error I encountered when using email_smtp_open

    Hi all,

I'm trying to send email using a Gmail account, this is how I write it.

    Code:
    dim ps as p
    email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.gmail.com" , 465 , "[email protected]" , "EmailPassword" , "SSL" )

I was testing this connection in an Interactive Window, and I received an email from Google saying a sign-in attempt was prevented.

I tried using a different Gmail account, regardless of company's email or personal email, I get the "Sign-In attempt prevented" email from Google.
Is there any setting's in Alpha that I've missed out ??

    Please help.

    Thanks

You're getting this message because Google is nice and secure. Did you follow the Learn more link? The link describes why you're getting this message and what do to about it.

If you want to, you can make access to your gmail account less secure by going to... https://myaccount.google.com/security

Scroll down to the bottom... Connected Apps and Sites... and then in the section Allow less secure apps... turn this on. Your XBasic code will then return .T. from the smtp call.

Re: Error I encountered when using email_smtp_open

        Hi David,

Yup, but because the email address will be replaced by my client's gmail account, so I'm not allowed to change their security settings.

Is there any other way for this to work, other than changing gmail account security ??

        Thank you.

        Jim

Not that I know of. Use Mandrill instead. Nicely integrated into Alpha and gmail likes it. There are some videos on it's setup and use.

Yes, you can use Alphas Nodejs integration. Install proper node packet, write a javascript exports.handler function to node_services folder and call that function using xbasic.
You can get it work with server or if you need also without server using just developer.

            Little extra learning...

That'd be cool. Could you detail what node packet would need to be installed and what the exports.handler function code would look like?

Ken, given your correct gmail account and pw, does this code successfully send an email for you without Gmail account settings changed to allow less secure apps?

I wondered why Gmail would treat an SMTP connection from Node.js any differently that any other SMTP connection. I'll confirm it doesn't. I'm afraid the code, as welcome as it is "this one time", wasn't tested before posting with the original premise of Gmail and so it's not quite a "ready solution" regardless of the missed point of this forum.

nodemailer does support XOauth2... more info here http://adilapapaya.com/docs/nodemailer/ but OAuth2 is a bit of a process as it involves multiple calls, tokens, and secret keys. This from the nodemailer doc...
XOAUTH2 authentication and token generation support - useful with Gmail

I'm afraid your code, as a posted solution to the Gmail access security issue, doesn't work. It produces exactly the same results. I guess I don't understand why you hadn't tested it before posting it as a solution. If you think about it, it couldn't work. Gmail is set up as it is. Sending it SMTP via one facility, or another, wouldn't make a bit of difference. It's going to refuse it across the board.

Also this, from the nodemailer docs...

You may need to "Allow Less Secure Apps" in your gmail account (it's all the way at the bottom). You also may need to "Allow access to your Google account"
