Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List control - stop propogation, but still get the correct value

    I have a list control where the click event of the control has an action.

    But I want to put a button on the list control that does something different, and does not fire the click action. So I do a stop propogation on the button.

    That is easy enough to do, but ....

    How do I get a value of the list row into the button?

    For instance, if the code on my button is

    alert('ID');

    I do NOT get the ID of the row that the button is on, rather I get the ID of the currently selected row. Clicking the button does not cause the row to be selected.

    If I do not stop propogation, the button works as expected, but I also fire the click event - which I don't really want to do.

    To duplicate:

    Create a list control and fill it with some data. Make sure the list control is set to return the primary key.

    On the click event of the list, put

    alert('this is a test');

    Put a button on the list with alert('ID'); as the button's click event.

    Then stop propogation on the button.

    As you click, you will see the issue.

    Re: List control - stop propogation, but still get the correct value

    I'm not sure if you've written your code correctly here in this post for what you want... because alert('ID'); will pop up a message containing the static text 'ID'.

    There is a lot of data passed into a button's OnClick event in a list. I think this is the information you're after. Have a look at the additonal information presented at the bottom of that property page for the OnClick event.

    In the OnClick event of your button...

    Code:
    alert('btnClick ' + data.CUSTOMER_ID + ' ' + rowNumber);
    Will give you data and the row number you're on... although that row is not set as the current active row of the list. It is the data of the row for the button you're clicking on.

      data.fieldname works from within the field row - for instance if you want to display the data for that field.

      but it doesn't work in the onclick event of the button. (You get undefined.)

      But -- rownumber does work, so I can use that to get the value I am looking for.

        You have to be careful with case... this is Javascript... both in your code and (I'd say) here in the forum.

        My List column field is CUSTOMER_ID and so data.CUSTOMER_ID is valid. You're getting undefined because you're referencing something that doesn't exist... most likely because of case. In the same vein, you report that rownumber does work, but actually... that would'nt work. rowNumber is valid. It's splitting hairs, but hair splitting is important here.

          You are correct.

          In Alpha I am used to capitalizing all field names in JavaScript, in this case my field is called JobID but data.JOBID does not work. data.JobID does indeed work.

          And I was careless with the jobNumber above - thank you for making sure the correct info is on the forum for anyone else who looks later!
