Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Custom error (eg, 404 not found) pages

    I want to put together a custom 404 page for my alpha project. So I built an .a5w page and plugged that into my AWS settings and I get a 500 error when I invoke a 404 error rather than my new 404 page.

    I'm doing something wrong. Can I use an .a5w page for my 404 message? Or am I limited to .html?

    Isn't 500 usually security related? ...I wonder if your A5W page needs it's security set to "Always Allowed".

      I believe the AWS gives you a 403 for insufficient security. I double-checked the security permissions, however, and it is set to "always allowed", so it's something else...

        500 error general all purpose error i think, the server got the request and does not know what to do with that request. 404 on the other hand server cannot find the resource requested, i think.

          Out of curiosity, I built an .html page and used that instead and it loads the page for the 404 error. I'm starting to think that this is limited to .html pages only.

          Has anyone built an .a5w page for their 404 error pages? Did it work? How did you do it?

            I was curious about this and did a quick testing.
            looks like you can have your own a5w page to show if there is 404 error.
            this is what I did.
            did an a5w page ( took my already made one) stuck that in the error page in was settings.
            stopped the server restarted it.
            made an intentional 404, voila, that page showed up.
            so I guess you can have your a5w page to show for a 404.

              Maybe that's the key? ...server restart?

                  Re: Custom error (eg, 404 not found) pages

                  I have restarted the server - it's required when you configure the 404 page. The AWS warns you about that when you plug in the file address.

                  Based on what you've posted, it's probably safe to assume this functionality is broken in some fashion as the 404 page doesn't load. It produces a 500 error. This is my .a5w page:

                  Code:
                  <!DOCTYPE html>
                  <html>
                  <head>
                  <title>404 Page not found</title>

                  </head>
                  <body>
                  <h1>404 Error</h1>
                  <p>Content not found.</p>
                  </body>
                  </html>
                  I'm going to contact alpha and see what they can do. Thanks for helping!

                    Re: Custom error (eg, 404 not found) pages

                    when i got up i investigated further and this is what seems to happen:
                    the error a5w i had belonged to entirely different db. and it was published and was available on the server with proper path alias set. ( that was my business db, since i use it always without knowing i picked that file, even though i was experimenting with different db)
                    so it comes to me that error code a5w's can be stored in a separate db, and published to the webserver, and the path alias set properly in the error db ( since these are all true with my business db).
                    so when you select that a5w page the path is known to alpha WAS and it can fetch that file. for that matter all the db's will fetch that file from then on.
                    or alpha can find out if something is indeed broken in that.
                    thanks for reading

                      This is a know issue that has already been fixed in the prerelease build back in early December. If you update to a prerelease, an A5W custom 404 page will work as expected.
