Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to Delete users from the security system

I am just learning about the Web Security systems...
I thought it would be a good idea to import a number of users & associated passwords...
This turned out to be a VERY bad idea!
I ended up importing 2000 users from a .dbf table...
    so...

I would rather not delete one-at-a-time... how can I delete all of these users or better... delete approximately 1800 of them ie delete using a query?

The webSecurity files are .dbf... they show up in the Web CPanel but I can't open them.

Do you get an error when you try to open the .dbf files? You should be able to open them...

If you have a list of user IDs that you want to delete, you could write an xbasic script to remove them. Check out the a5ws_delete_user method: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha..._User+Function.

You can find more security methods here: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha...rity+Functions

Re: How to Delete users from the security system

      Thanks for the reply...
The security files show up in the Web CPanel not the desktop CPanel. When I open the file XL loads and I can delete the records and save the file... so I guess that I can use this technique to delete users that I don't want.
It just seems to me that this is a very awkward way to manage large numbers of users. I'm sure that AlphaSoftware has provided more efficient ways... I will have to search the video library... but any suggestions would be appreciated.
Your suggestion re: A5WS_Delete_User() etc is valuable but what it seems to imply is that I must write my own user management system... ok... but If I can't get to the tables that have the user and group information is located (other than with XL) how can I effectively use A5WS_Delete_User() and other commands to build such a system?
      Thanks

There are a number of pre-designed UX Components you can use for managing security.

        uxSecurity.png

Within the web project itself, you can access the local user files through the Web Security interface.

        wpcpSecurity.png

If you can access these .dbf files directly, you could also build a Grid Component that used them as a data source. It sounds like they're DBF files, so hooking that up would only require adding the dbf files to the control panel (not the web projects control panel) so they could be referenced by the Grid.

A security management system exists in Alpha. There are some pre-built interfaces available for you to add to your project, but not all needs are the same, so it's up to you to create the interfaces you need/want to manage users. Bulk operations are probably one of those things that you'll need to create yourself.

If you want a pre-built system, there are a number of packages out there. I've used Steve Wood's Alpha To Go system. It has a double opt in system for registration with an extended set of data you can collect/track with user records.

Re: How to Delete users from the security system

If you have the option to use a SQL backend, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MS SQL, the security web tables can be put into the SQL database. Makes it a bit easier to build grids and other data driven interfaces off the tables when they're in SQL compared to the DBFs since the DBF tables must live in the web projects folder, not the top-level directory where the main project file lives. With the SQL solution, the DBF files become active link tables in the web projects folder and you can basically ignore them once everything is configured.

AHA!!! this is where I went wrong!!!
Now that I know where the .dbf files are being kept I can simply add them to the desktop CPanel, from which I can easily delete the rows...
            THANKS!!!
