Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Populate List from Using Data Cache without population Columns

    The Client-side Data Cache new functionality (genie) is very good. In the video Selwyn demonstrates how to populate a list and dynamically sets the columns. What function do I use if I only wants to populate the list in the on-success event and do not set the columns dynamically?

    I do this exact thing. The data returned is json you should be able to populate the list easily. I won't be at the computer until tomorrow ill upload some sample code if no one else answers.

        Re: Populate List from Using Data Cache without population Columns

        Norman, sorry I'm late with this, I had a bit of a busy couple of days.

        Ok, you have to create an action javascript for the client side data cache actions. The action name is read data and you fill in your data item. (which I'm sure you know, I'm just starting from the basics)

        Here are two samples both of which go in the onsuccess javascript event.

        ---this first sample is to populate a drop down. The tags description and locationid must much the case from your sql query.

        var arr = [];
        var b = [];
        for(var i = 0; i < data.length; i++) {
        b=[];
        b.push(data[i].description);
        b.push(data[i].locationid);
        arr.push(b);
        }
        {dialog.Object}.populateDropdownBox('LOCATIONID',arr,true);

        -- this next sample is to populate a list box

        -- this first line is an example of a filter to be applied
        data.clientid == {dialog.Object}.getValue('clientid') && data.actionid == {dialog.Object}.getValue('actionid')

        -- this is the code that goes in the onsuccess event. Note my assumption is the list matches the data items in the client side cache, item for item. If they do not, there are tutorials in the pre-release notes that provide samples. Since the items match, my list is populated with the existing formatting, css, etc.

        var _lobj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST4');
        _lobj.populate(data);

        That is all there is to it. Figuring it out is another story.

        Regards, Ken

          Ken
          Thank you very much. I used:
          var _lobj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST4');
          _lobj.populate(data);

          And works on my developing computer in Live Preview and Working Preview perfectly.
          I wrap it in phonegap and installed it on my IPhone 4S. Then it does not read the data from the file system / local storage.
          Can you perhaps help?

            Hi Norman,

            In the latest prerelease Selwyn has a video about client side data cache; its definitely useful. Let me know if you need a link.

              You need this build
              3411 (THIS IS A BETA RELEASE OF Alpha Anywhere)
              Addins: 4611
              or greater to use the cache with PhoneGap - Selwyn has done some great work on this.
