Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cascading dropdown - setValue of child

    Here's a puzzle - I have a dropdown of Countries, and a dependent child dropdown of States/Provinces.

    So, I need to setValue for both, but can't get the child dropdown to populate.

    This, for instance, assigns correctly for Ret_Country, but leaves the Ret_State control blank:

    Code:
    function one() {
        {dialog.object}.setValue('Ret_Country', 'US');
    }

    function two() {
        {dialog.object}.setValue('Ret_State', 'NY');
    }

    A5.executeThisThenThat(one,two);
    I suppose I could do a bunch more work with event triggers, callbacks and populating the list choices with callbacks and populate accordingly, but it sure would be nice if I could make this or a version of it work. Any ideas?

      Ok let me guess it is not working because the state field is not populated yet.
      Work around.
      Fill another , non bound, field with the value of the state field and in the on change of that field you fill the state field.

        Steve, I think it's a timing issue.

        If you set a timeout around the second call, it should populate for you.

        Code:
        {dialog.object}.setValue('Ret_Country', 'US');

        setTimeout(function(){ {dialog.object}.setValue('Ret_State', 'NY'); }, 500);

          Not a timing issue Nate. I've tried putting a button on the UX and delivering a value straight to the control, but it won't do it. It's a "conflict" issue with the cascading dropdown.

          And Pieter's suggestion is interesting, but I'm going to have to spend some time seeing if I can make anything out of it. This needs to be able to be changed by the user, but before they get to it, if I have it, I need to fill it with their existing value.

            this is on a list control? or just dropdown controls in an ux/dialog?

                Just a followup on this. I never found a way to do this with the built-in cascading dropdown in place. So I just revised it, initially populating both dropdowns with e.rtc lists, then using the onChange event and populateDropdownBox() on the Country control to repopulate the State/province dropdown.

                  since I do not have access to list, I won't know how this is done.
                  usually the cascading dropdown needs the data feed to be the same for the parent and the dependent child so they can relate to each other. is this true in the list also?

                    Gandhi - It goes like this:

                    You just make a callback on the parent dropdown onChange event. That callback queries the correct data to fill the child dropdown -- using the submitted parent value for the filter. Then use the populateDropdownBox() method to repopulate the child. Vides D53, D59 and D60 are all pertinent here.
