Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

PDF report printing issue in the App Server

Last Friday evening we installed the then current patch for Alpha Anywhere. On Saturday we discovered that none of reports would print correctly on through the Application Server. They would print ok on the development machine, but in through the server. Certain parts of the Title and group titles would not display. OK, so we waited until Monday and again installed the then current patch, thinking the issue had already been discovered and fixed. Same problem, though. This morning we installed the most current patch thinking it might fix the problem. No luck.

So we sent a bug report off the Alpha Software. After several hours of exchanging emails, the issue was resolved. It turns out that some browsers (I was using Safari on my Mac) would not display the font.
The fix was an easy one. In Project Properties, PDF Printing Options, PDF Options there is an option to ?Embed Fonts?. Check the box to make it true. Issue resolved.

I wanted to report this to the community for 2 reasons. It would seem that this option should be checked true for virtually all of your applications. It would certainly prevent hours of searching and trying the find out why a PDF wouldn?t print correctly in the application server. Besides, who knows what browser your customer uses, so this covers them all.

Secondly, and perhaps more important was the help and support I received from Alpha Software. I would rate it higher than excellent. They, Cian Chambliss in particular, when out of his way to find the issue and resolve it for me. Big time thank you to Cian for his help. I am very appreciative of his help.

For what it's worth, if you save reports on the desktop side as pdf files, you have to make this same change to the pdf options since the latest update.

        Tim

Thanks for your efforts on letting us know about this. Unfortunately clicking the embed fonts option did not solve my problem. I am running the most current production version of AA (4.3.1)

Here is what I am seeing on a report that has worked for YEARS.....

My Development Machine View of the report PDF
        development.png

My Server view of the same PDF
        server.png

The tan background line is my grouping. Only the FIRST record prints correctly. The white background portion is the body of the report.

Any suggestions? I did choose to embed fonts....republished the entire site and even restarted the WAS after making the change.

I will be contacting Alpha about this to see if they have any ideas.

        Thanks
        Greg

Selwyn already replied with a suggestion that fixed my problem. He had me uncheck the setting "Allow All International Characters in Free-Form Reports." Once I did that, the report started printing correctly again. As always, AMAZINGLY FAST support from Alpha!! Thanks Selwyn!
