Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    afterDialogValidate code

    I want to implement some code in a ux (dialog) in the server side afterDialogValidate event that will either allow or deny a record to be entered but I do not know how to go about doing it. On my sql server i created a view to test a theory of mine and so i did the following:

    SELECT COUNT(*) as IncompleteClass
    FROM
    courses
    WHERE
    courses.MAIN_ID = 8064 AND
    courses.FK_CLASS_ID = 30 AND
    courses.COMPLETION_OUTCOME LIKE "%*%"

    In the example above I hard coded the MAIN_ID and FK_CLASS_ID value.
    When I run this view with these particular values the count returns zero, since there are no records that include the asterisk, if this case is true I want to allow the record to be entered, but if this result is greater than 0 I want to alert the user that an Incomplete class exists and the user can not Submit.

    So basically a code that says if result = 0, allow submition, else if result >0 then alert(Incomplete class exists for current student)

    The column values for MAIN_ID and FK_CLASSES_ID will come from the ux based on what the user has selected, but the COMPLETION_OUTCOME column will always remain the same. I want to prevent the user from entering new records if there are records that exist and are incomplete, in my database the asterisk denotes an incomplete class.

    Thank you for your time.

    Re: afterDialogValidate code

    Have you considered doing this in the dialogValidate event? You could make your determination there, and then set these properties.

    dialogValidate.hasError = .f.
    dialogValidate.errorText = ""

    The prototype help in the event is full of good information. If you set the .hasError = .t. then the AfterdialogValidate event won't fire, and you have lots of options to inform/interact with the user at that time.

      Re: afterDialogValidate code

      Thank you for the reply, Ill definitely have to set the .hasError, but what I dont know is how to call and store the result of

      SELECT COUNT(*) as IncompleteClass
      FROM
      courses
      WHERE
      courses.MAIN_ID = 8064 AND
      courses.FK_CLASS_ID = 30 AND
      courses.COMPLETION_OUTCOME LIKE "%*%"

      in order for the dialogValidate.hasError to evaluate?

        Disclaimer - I wrote this in the message board editor, not the Alpha code editor. And a few of your details will probably differ.

        I'll also refer you to this: http://www.downloads.alphasoftware.c...SQLTables.html

        Code:
        dim cn as sql::connection
        dim args as sql::arguments
        dim rs as sql::resultset
        sql = <<%a%
        SELECT COUNT(*) as IncompleteClass
        FROM
        courses
        WHERE
        courses.MAIN_ID = :Main_ID AND
        courses.FK_CLASS_ID = :Class_ID AND
        courses.COMPLETION_OUTCOME LIKE "%*%"
        %a%
        args.set("Main_ID", e.dataSubmitted.Main_ID)
        args.set("Class_ID", e.dataSubmitted.Class_ID)

        cn.open("::name::YourConnectionName")
        cn.execute(sql, args)
        rs = cn.resultSet
        vCount = rs.data(1)
        cn.freeresult()
        cn.close()

        if vCount = 0
           ' do something
        else
          ' do something else

          Re: afterDialogValidate code

          Thank you for the post, just so that I understand whats going on, the cn.resultSet will return the value that the sql command returns? Then I need to set it into a variable which you named vCount by using vCount = rs.data(1). Is that correct. Im still learning the codes and how to use them. Heres how I plan to use the code.
          Code:
          dim cn as sql::connection
          dim args as sql::arguments
          dim rs as sql::resultset

          sql = <<%a%
          SELECT COUNT(*) as IncompleteClass
          FROM
          courses
          WHERE
          courses.MAIN_ID = :Main_ID AND
          courses.FK_CLASS_ID = :Class_ID AND
          courses.COMPLETION_OUTCOME LIKE "%*%"
          %a%

          args.set("Main_ID", e.dataSubmitted.MAIN_ID)
          args.set("Class_ID", e.dataSubmitted.FK_CLASS_ID)

          cn.open("::name::LTS")
          cn.execute(sql, args)
          rs = cn.resultSet
          vCount = rs.data(1)
          cn.freeresult()
          cn.close()

          if vCount >= 1
             alert("Incomplete Class Exists for current student")
          else
          	ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data::Save_Submitted_Data_to_Table_s_")

            How do I get the alert to work?

            Code:
            if vCount >= 1
               alert("Incomplete Class Exists for current student")
            else
            	ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data::Save_Submitted_Data_to_Table_s_")
            end if
            Ive tried

            Code:
            afterDialogValidate = "alert('Incomplete Class Exists for Current Student');"
            Code:
            alert("Incomplete Class Exists for current student")
            Code:

              e.javascript = "alert('ERROR: Incomplete Class Exists for Current Student');"

                ivan
                even though you are satisfied, I like to bring to your attention that unless you instruct it otherwise the record will be saved.
                you are doing it right in the dialog validate event, but that event instructions are not done right.
                you do not need e.javascript but scroll down on that event somewhere in the middle you will see
                has errors turn that to true
                and fill in your error statement in the html part next line
                so the record will not be save but the error message will pop out.

                edit: I am not sure you are doing this in dialogvalidate event or not, that is the place to do this kind of stuff, not afterDialogvalidate.
                if you want to set the pop up message you can still do it with e.javascript.

                    Thank you for the info Ghandi, I did place the code in the afterDialgValidate. I will move it to the dialogValidate just as you stated, and use the
                    Code:
                    if vCount >= 1
                      dialogValidate.hasError = .t.

                      sure, but go down the function in the middle alpha has the uncommented two lines

                      dialogValidate.hasError = .f.
                      dialogValidate.errorText = ""
                      comment them out or you logic will be overwritten by alpha. - be careful.
