Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Prevent Parent Submit unless repeating section has at least one value

    Title pretty much says it all.

    I have the new record default on the parent to show only one repeating section row. The user can add additional rows by clicking a button

    It has a dropdown which saves a PK (numeric). The "if blank" message for the dropdown is "Select a Person" kinda deal

    I want the validation to fail if the user does not select at least one person (changing the blank "Select a Person" message to a numeric pk) so that the parent ux can NOT be saved

    I am able to get a count of rows...but that seems to ignore the fact that a row could not have a value in the dropdown.

    Thanks for any help you may provide!

    okay since I cannot tell what is the field name in the repeating section
    say the field name is primary_key which is a dropdown, you need to check only the first row which is e.dataSubmitted.primary_key[1]
    so in the dialogValidate event
    Code:
    dim pk as n
    pk = e.dataSubmitted.primary_key[1]
    if pk = "" then
    dialogValidate.hasError = .t.
    dialogValidate.errorText = " here you insert your favorite error message"
    end if
    then go to the middle of the function the same lines appear, comment them out so your logic will prevail.

    see if this works.

      Gandhi,

      Haste makes waste....I failed to scroll down on this and forgot about the pre-entered code here negating my other work.

      Thanks so much!

        Re: Prevent Parent Submit unless repeating section has at least one value

        But you don't need to go all the way to the Server to check for data that you already have... or don't have. That's like walking out of your house with nothing... going all the way to the store... and the store clerk says... what are you looking for... and you say... I'm checking to make sure I don't have anything. And the store clerk says... but you came in with nothing... so why didn't you check before you came all the way down here?

        On your submit button... you can either Submit or not. There's a couple of ways to check your repeating section...

        This option harvests a column. Since you're dealing with a dropdown you'll need to clean up the "empty" data a bit because the dropdown choices may come through as comma delimited.

        Code:
        var checkVal = {dialog.Object}.harvestRepeatingSectionColumn('SystemType');
        checkVal = checkVal.replace(/,/g , "");
        if(checkVal == ''){
        	alert('Please fill in at least one row');
        	return;
        }else{
        	{dialog.object}.submit();
        }
        or

        This option grabs the 1st row of a control in a repeating section.

        Code:
        var checkVal = {dialog.Object}.getValue('SystemType:1');
        if(checkVal == ''){
        	alert('Please fill in at least one row');
        	return;
        }else{
        	{dialog.object}.submit();
        }

          David,

          Good advice for sure.....my javascript chops are pretty minimal....so the server side approach fit my comfort level better...however...with your excellent code I was able to do the client side approach. Thank you !!
