Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List Filter with RegExp

    Three of us have spent the evening, and can't figure out how to filter a list with RegExp as we want (not having success with any other methods either).

    So, we have a list with a single field DataPoint.

    This works if the field equals "RBC"

    Code:
    var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('Source');
    lObj.setFilter(
        {
            DataPoint: RegExp('RBC,'i')
        }
    );
    But challenge 1 is for when the field contains RBC - can't make that work. And what we're really going to need is when the field contains RBC and SomeOtherPhrase.

    I've done a hundred of these using other filter methods but not today. Anyone know how to make this work?

    Thanks.

    Re: List Filter with RegExp

    Check Syntax missing '

    DataPoint: RegExp('RBC,'i')
    if all else fails use
    listObj.filterListClientSide()
    e.g.
    var searchFor = {dialog.object}.getValue('Search');
    var listObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('SOURCE');
    listObj.filterListClientSide(searchFor);
    Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

      That's just a typo in my message here Pete.

      We're still interested in how to do this with RegExp, and/or using two search terms.

      We're still interested in the proper syntax here for a RegExp "contains" expression.

      The last example you gave only allows one search term.

      I've done this many times before but am having no success with this one.

        Re: List Filter with RegExp

        It's not clear what you're looking for.

        If you have a List with 2 rows... and a field with data...

        RBC Bank of Canada
        RBC Investments

        You want to filter the List by supplying the filter params as, for example, 'RBC' and 'Bank', which would return 1 row. Filtering on RBC would return 2 rows.

        Is this what you're looking for?

        BTW... DataPoint: RegExp('RBC','i')... is a 'contains' filter.

          Re: List Filter with RegExp

          It's a list of medical datapoints. So, I'm supplying the user with two Search fields -- not the usual single field. The user may enter "RBC" in the first Search field (red blood cell count). But, that may return too many results, so in the second Search field, they may want to add the another term such as "Gastric". This will then further filter that list down to the medical datapoint(s) that are both RBC and Gastric.

          Right now I'm hoping I can manage all this well enough on the client side -- we'll see how big that list gets.

            Re: List Filter with RegExp

            In order to perform a 'CONTAINS, 'AND', filter on a field of data in a List control, you can do this...

            Code:
            var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('list1');
            var filter1 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('filterFld1');
            var filter2 = {dialog.Object}.getValue('filterFld2');
            var reFilter1 = RegExp(filter1, 'i');
            var reFilter2 = RegExp(filter2, 'i');

            lObj.setFilter(function(data){
            	var f1 = data.LASTNAME == null?"":data.LASTNAME;
            	var f2 = data.LASTNAME == null?"":data.LASTNAME;
            	if(f1.match(reFilter1) && f2.match(reFilter2)) return true; // yes, show this row
            		else return false; // no, hide this row
            });
            This code runs off a button outside the List Control.
            We grab the List control, and the values we want to filter.
            Then we turn those filter values into Regular Expressions.
            Then we perform a .setFilter on the List using the function option.
            In the function we get the data (in my case, the List column LASTNAME (watch the case here))
            If the data matches our 1st RegExp AND the data matches our 2nd RegExp then the row is included in the filtered List.

            So... given this data... as 4 rows

            RBC
            RBC Gastric
            RBC and Gastricitis
            Normal RBC

            then filter values of rbc and gastric will return 2 rows
            filter values of just rbc will return 4 rows

              Thanks very much for this David. I had also attempted this approach but didn't quite get there. With a couple small changes it helped me get what I needed.

                  Also a point to note:

                  REMEMBER: Within setFilter, fieldnames are case sensitive.
