Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Code works in AfterInsertRecord but not in AfterUpdateRecords

    Hello,

    I have the following code which works perfectly well in the AfterInsertRecord event handler of a grid component. After data is entered into primary table, the code fetches another table (in this e.g the "account" table) and enters data into it.

    Now I need to achieve the same task but this time using a view to update record. After updating record in the primary table the code is meant to open the "account" and enter data but it does not work.

    Any help?

    Thanks

    tbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\account")

    tbl.enter_begin(.T.)

    tbl.clientID = e.datasubmitted.clientID
    tbl.date_payment = e.datasubmitted.date_payment
    tbl.date_post = date()
    tbl.Particulars = e.datasubmitted.Particulars
    tbl.amount = e.datasubmitted.amount

    tbl.enter_end(.T.)
    tbl.close()

    Hi Isang,

    When you say "it does not work", what doesn't work? Is there an error message? Does it update the wrong records?

    I would recommend putting a debug(1) statement in here and running this in Live or Working Preview and stepping through the code to see what its doing. You mention updating a "view". It's my interpretation that views are a read-only database construct. Are you seeing errors trying to do an update on a 'view' rather than a 'table'? Does it work for a table? Does it work for other 'views'?

      Re: Code works in AfterInsertRecord but not in AfterUpdateRecords

      Thank you Sarah,

      I'm sorry for not explaining the situation properly. What I meant to type was "detailed view" and not "view" please. When I use the code in a data entry grid component, it works well. After data is entered into the primary table (the one directly updated by the grid), the code opens another table ("account" table in my example) and enters data.

      Now I want to use the detailed view of a grid component to update record in the primary table and after the data is updated, I want the same code to open the "account" table and enter data the same way it did in the data entry grid component.

      In the data entry grid component, I placed the code in the AfterInsertRecord event handler and it works fine. In the detailed view for updating data, I placed the code in the AfterUpdateRecords event handler but it returns the following error message:

      "e.datasubmitted.clientID" not found

        Just to verify (because adding an s to something is easy):
        There are 2 server-side events for after a record is updated. AfterUpdateRecord and AfterUpdateRecords. One has an 's' on the end.

        Is your code in AfterUpdateRecord? Or AfterUpdateRecords? AfterUpdateRecords doesn't have an e.dataSubmitted option and only exists for backwards compatibility with Alpha Five Version 9.

        If it's in AfterUpdateRecords (with an s), try moving it to AfterUpdateRecord (no s).

          Thank you Beta, I was actually using AfterUpdateRecords instead of AfterUpdateRecord. It works fine now. Peace
