Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can a UX Component be based on an SQL Statement?

    I would like to place a Control Type of Type Image on a UX component. The image is from a URL that is built from two fields in my table and also a variable. The variable holds the storage location on a cloud server. The two fields in my table hold the file name of the image and the file extension:

    Variable = http://099c539febdc0e564774-bde05fef...2.rackcdn.com/
    File Name = 551f701e-f9c7-11e4-9540-bc764e100d45
    File Extension = jpg

    When you put them all together http://099c539febdc0e564774-bde05fef...764e100d45.jpg

    How do I bind my Image Control Type to a calculated field? My thought was that I could base the UX component on an SQL statement and in that statement have a calculated field that formed the image URL from the three components. But the only options I can see for data binding involve selecting tables and forming simple joins.

    Furthermore, unlike Controls of different types the Image type does not have a calculated value option.

    Please help if you have some knowledge to share.
    Thank you,
    CPGood

    I thought I recognized that image. You probably should have continued this thread... http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...t=bc764e100d45

    Have to say, as well, that the title of this post doesn't really represent the question. Generally, what you want to do is, in your SQL Statement, concat the image detail fields together as one named field. Your fully qualified image URL will now be seen as 1 field in your UX. You don't say where your data table is... MySQL? same as the last post? If so, do a web search for MySQL concatenate 2 fields and you'll find out how to do this.

    Do you have another new post asking essentially the same question, but for a grid?

      Hi David,

      Thank you for your reply. Yes it ia a MySQL database and I understand how to write an SQL statement that concatenates the values together and I'm doing that for grid.

      1. But, I do not see how to base a UX component on an SQL statement.
      2. I do not understand what a "named" field is.

      Sorry for dragging this out. I'm am now able to return to working on this problem.

      Thank you for your help,

        Re: Can a UX Component be based on an SQL Statement?

        You can create a data-bound UX component based on a table (or tables) or a view. Create a view for your SQL Statement.

        Create a new UX, add a field... a textbox... and in the New Control dialog that pops up, select the link "Populate list from a table" and walk through the process. In recent versions of Alpha, control buttons and server-side actions will be created for you. Check the server-side onDialogInitialize event for the server-side action which populates your UX with data. You can add a server-side filter here. If it wasn't created for you, you can add it using the Action Scription button that is displayed when you get into the Server-side events.

          I think I understand what you'd like to do now. You have 3 fields coming into your UX which make up the full URL of your image.

          Add a non-data bound image control to your UX... let's say it's IMAGE_1. In the client-side onRenderComplete event you can do this...

          Code:
          var imageURL = {dialog.Object}.getValue('text1');
          var imageName = {dialog.Object}.getValue('text2');
          var imageType = {dialog.Object}.getValue('text3');
          var imageSrc = imageURL + imageName + imageType;
          var image = {dialog.Object}.getPointer('IMAGE_1');
          image.src = imageSrc;
          This will assign the full image URL to your image control src.
