Javascript to populate Dropdown in Repeating section

This should be simple, but I don't see what's wrong.

If I put this on a button to populate a dropdown outside a repeating section, it works just fine:

           var data = '';
            data = ['one','two','three'];
            var curData = '';
            var clearExisting = true;
            {dialog.object}.populateDropdownBox('R_Dropdown',data,clearExisting);

But I can't figure out how to get it to populate within a repeating section. I've tried, for instance, 'V.R1.R_DROPDOWN_A5INSTANCE6' and everything else I can think of (yes, I'm sure it's the 6th row) but no joy. Wassup here?

I found this if it helps...

{dialog.object}.populateDropdownBoxRepeatingSection(controlName,data,clearExistingData)

The example says it's the same as the method you posted but for repeating sections. It also says it will do all rows, which may not be what you want.

Yup, that does it. I know I'd seen that before but didn't remember it, and amazingly in several hours' effort didn't come across it. C'mon documentation!

OK, so the next step is to have a variable list of choices, with a display value and a stored value, and populate the dropdown. Got a magic function for that one? I can see a huge time sink here if I don't ask. I can provide the choices list in any format - can't really find any reference on it.

			var choices = '{Guard1,1},{Guard2,2},{Guard3,3}';
			var jsData = [];

			// split string into an array:
			var parts = choices.split(',');
			var arrayLength = parts.length;			
			for (var i = 0; i < arrayLength; i++) {
			    var txt = {html: parts[i], value: parts[2]};
				jsData.push(txt);
			}	
				var curData = '';

This just produces a list like:

[Object Object]
[Object Object]
. . .

Maybe just a format issue with the curly brackets instead of the square?
From the Insert Method box:

//Populate the choices in the Dropdown Box for the 'COMPANY' field. Replace the existing choices. Each new choice that is
added has both a display and stored value.
{dialog.Object}.populateDropdownBox('COMPANY',[['alpha 2','A2'],['beta 2','B2'],['display for c','C2']],true);

I'd give it an actual try but I've got to get to the bank. Hopefully it's that simple or someone else can give you a hand.

I dunno, I've tried everything I can think of, every combination of quotes, escaped quotes, nuthin. Here are two experiments that didn't work.

var choices = "['Guard1','1'],['Guard2','2'],['Guard3','3']";
var choices = ['Guard1','1'],['Guard2','2'],['Guard3','3'];

this is how it should look, i think
var choices = [ ['Guard1', '1'],['Guard2', '2'],['Guard3', '3'] ];
var clearExisting = true;
{dialog.object}.populateDropdownBoxRepeatingSection('R_Dropdown',choices, clearExisting);

ps:
i just checked against a dummy repeating section it works as expected. updates with the stored data as shown.

if you need to push data into an array then

//var choices = [['Home','1'],['Office','2'],['Vacation Home','3']];
var choices = [];
choices.push(['Home','1']);
choices.push(['Office', '2']);
choices.push(['Vacation Home', '3']);
var clearExisting = true;
//{dialog.Object}.populateDropdownBoxRepeatingSection('ADDRESS_TYPE',[['Home','1'],['Office','2'],['Vacation Home', '3']],true);

the commented out areas are for me when it was working and then when I changed to new one, does not affect the outcome as you know.

That looks promising Gandhi, thanks. It populates correctly, it'll be tomorrow probably until I can assure that it's returning the stored value, though I bet it is. Overflowing in box here.

I think I'm one step away from finishing this.

The choice list *really* comes from either a list control or alternately localstorage. So, I need to get that string and plug it in, but this is elusive. As always, I can control what the input string looks like. It seems to me that I should be able to do this:

			var cdata = obj.Resp_Choices;
			// cdata looks like this: ['Guard1', '1'],['Guard2', '2'],['Guard3', '3']
			var choices = [];
			choices.push(cdata); 
			
			var curData = '';
			var clearExisting = true;
			{dialog.object}.populateDropdownBoxRepeatingSection('R_Dropdown',choices,clearExisting);

That doesn't work. If I try to treat the whole thing as a string, e.g.

choices = '[' + cdata + ']'

then that fails as well.

What I have in more general terms is variable data to populate the dropdown list. Should not take 24 hours to figure this out.

I don't have anything for this stored in localstorage yet. I'm trying to figure out *what* to store and in what format to work with the javascript here. Right now I'm using this string from a List control, but I can change it to fit whatever is going to work:

['Guard1','1'],['Guard2','2'],['Guard3','3']

I tried what you suggested here, but so far no good.

you could add
alert(typeof(cdata));

that will show what you have to start with before converting to something else.

if you show exactly what you have i can take a look at it where it fails.
