Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Server license issue

Anybody ever have an issue where their server periodically reverts back to demo mode? I've got an Alpha Five server that has been in production for years now. The issue started when I upgraded from version 11 to 12. I purchased an application server license and developer license from Alpha. Everything seemed to go fine with the transition. But it seems like every 20-30 days the server stops working and you get the following error message if you browse to the server (see attached). If I restart the application server, this resolves the issue, and it won't become a problem again for another 20-30 days. I have a similar issue with the developer client software. Every so often I get an error message on that saying I am running an unlicensed copy. I go through the activation process in the software and it activates successfully. Very annoying, any ideas?

I see that on both my copy and customer copies every so often.

So it sounds like other people may be experiencing this. But no resolution ideas from anyone? On the client side, it is more of an annoyance. On the server side, it is very disruptive because nobody can access the site when it reverts to demo mode.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? This license issue has not bee resolved. I periodically have to restart the application to clear the error. It used to be about every month or so, now it is doing it almost weekly. It is getting very annoying.

Have you contacted Alpha about the issue?

I believe this is the same issue reported by Pete in reply #85 of this thread http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...cription/page3

I have not contacted Alpha. How does one get in touch with them? I don't have any kind of support contract or anything, I always assumed that was required to reach out to them. I saw where I can purchase a one time incident for $250 bucks, seems kind of silly for me to have to pay that for a license issue.

Try calling them (800) 451-1018. I can't see that you would be charged for asking about this type of issue, especially when others are noticing it too.

Ok, I've got an email going with them and they are working with me without me paying anything. We'll see where this goes. Thanks.

                  Re: Server license issue

Here is what I think happens. If you create and or compile an app with an unlicensed developer and you publish that to your webserver the server reverts to demo mode even though the server is licensed. That is what has happened to me.

                    Re: Server license issue

In my case the developer is licensed, itt doesn't seem to have anything to do with publishing that I have experienced. It all started when I upgraded from version 11 to 12. Both my developer license and server license are for version 12.

                        Re: Server license issue

Hey David, I've still got Alpha looking into this. That said they have not seen any other cases other than mine. We do nightly reboots of our server (I started this a while back because I was having some instability issues with the Alpha server). What apparently happens is that occasionally on reboot, the server fails to re-activate with the licensing server. What is weird about my situation is that in Alpha 12 (build 3599), there was some retry logic added so that the server will continually try to re-activate the license. We looked at some of the application logs in Windows, and my server only seems to make the attempt one time before going into demo mode. This seems to have the Alpha team baffled, and they said they might try to create a special build for me to do some additional logging and try to figure out what is going on. But they have been kind of busy, so it has been a slow process. I will be sure to update this post if I find out any additional information.

Thanks for the reply Carl. If I figure out the issue I'll let you know as well. I have multiple servers and only one of them has an issue with nightly restarts.

                            Re: Server license issue

I had a similar problem which was caused by the server time clock going out of sync. Once I synchronised the time clock the problem disappeared.
