Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Project Images - Displayed in Live Preview but not Working Preview or on Device

I have a logo, that appears as expected on Live Preview, and appears as expected on a browser launched from live preview, but it does not appear on working preview, nor will it appear on the mobile device.

    Edit:
Using a URL instead of a static image, I am able to display the logo on the Live Preview and the working preview, but it still won't display on the mobile device.

    Edit 2:
    Solved.

    Not satisfactorily, but solved.

The solution I found on the forums and in the help files is on the following line:

Re: Project Images - Displayed in Live Preview but not Working Preview or on Device

Short Answer: I had to tell the "PhoneGap Shell" to download the logo image, and the custom CSS file, and discovered that these MUST be placed in the PhoneGap "root" directory on the mobile device.

The problem was caused by the PhoneGap "shell" I was using to develop and test my project, which does not automatically update resources each time a "test" app is called by the PhoneGap shell.

      Long Answer:

The project I am working on is being developed using the Alpha "PhoneGap Shell" which is easier than developing a "full" Alpha/PhoneGap app, since the "shell" merely loads an Alpha App into its chromeless browser, where a "full" Alpha/PhoneGap App contains your main project which encapsulates PhoneGap functions.

Forgive me if you already know this, but the PhoneGap "shell" is an app developed by Alpha which is a minimum "PhoneGap" environment that allows a developer to "call in" various Alpha Anywhere apps, which enables the developer to test function calls to the PhoneGap API without having to re-compile, re-submit, and re-build your full project.

Therefore, the "PhoneGap Shell" basically "wraps around" your project, but a "fully developed" PhoneGap project contains mainly your code, with the PhoneGap functionality encapsulated within it.

This difference is why my project failed to display its images properly, and also is the reason my project failed to update on the mobile device after I made changes to the project CSS.

The Differences as I understand them:

      Running under "PhoneGap Shell":
If you are running the "PhoneGap Shell," you must open the PhoneGap Shell project itself, and include any assets that your actual project will expect to find when it is running in the PhoneGap "sandbox", and be certain to reference the locations within the PhoneGap directory path where these assets are stored, which in many instances MUST be the root of the PhoneGap application base on the mobile device, and that INCLUDES all of your CSS files! If you don't do this, the PhoneGap shell will run your app, your app will ask for image or CSS assets from the PhoneGap shell, but since it was your project that was updated, and not the shell, PhoneGap will not be able to find the assets, and for some reason, your mobile project will not get them from the Alpha Server where they are usually stored, which is why "Live Preview" worked, but "Working Preview" and the mobile device failed to display the images or the updated CSS. Later, I fixed "Working Preview" by making sure the assets were in a place where the Working Preview browser could find them.

Running an Alpha App with PhoneGap enabled:
If you have created your project, and then enabled the "PhoneGap" features, you will have created an Alpha App with PhoneGap integrated, which will also require you to complete a list of additional files you wish to have uploaded to the "PhoneGap Build" service each time you update your project, and then re-build it for testing. This scenario is very different from the use of the PhoneGap shell because the "fully developed" Alpha/PhoneGap app will upload your latest project resources every time you update the project with the PhoneGap Build service. Just be sure that you re-visit the PhoneGap configuration page in your Alpha project whenever you add new assets that may not have been included in your last build.
