Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Confused how to code a UX for nested one to many tables

I see that it is a no-no to code a ux with nested one-to-many tables.

I want to build a medium complex mobile app. How does one get around the issue of nested one-to-many tables ?

    Simple example:

    Dept (swipe right)
    Emp (swip right )
    Position (swipe right)

    Thanks, Dave

When you say "nested one-to-many tables", are you referring to a many-to-many relationship?.. If so, I use many-to-many relationships all the time in UX components with no issue.. What are you trying to accomplish exactly?

Simply bind 3 tables (for starters).

      Department
      has one to one employees
each employee has one to many positions

Many to Many? hmmm, not sure it's exactly that...

Linking Dept to multiple Employees, and each Employee to multiple positions...

Ahh okay, I see.. Funny that it outputs "pos" on the bottom of the alert. (Couldn't resist..)

I have never actually experienced this, will give it a try and see what I can come up with.

What you may end up having to do is dig into Xbasic to get this done since it apparently does not support this type of data binding.

            haha.

On a mobile app, are you able to say swipe right, and call another UX which would have the POS (position ;) stuff ?

Yes, can definitely do it by tapping into the relevant event..

I am concerned as to how you've structured your three tables and why you've chosen to go this route.

If I were wanting something like what you are describing, I would have something like this:

              1.jpg

Then.. In your UX component, do something like this:

              2.jpg

THEN... With your UX component, utilize panels to get the swiping effect you are looking for :)

Edit: On the individual panel cards, you have an onSwipe event that you can use to do with whatever you please..

              What do you think?

Riley, but I see you have a positionid on the employee table. Employees in my instance, can have multiple positions... Unless I am missing something?

I appreciate your help! I am just getting started on mobile....

Ok, then you need a many-to-many relationship.. You have to add another table, like this:

                  3.jpg

                  Something similar to this effect..

Re: Confused how to code a UX for nested one to many tables

So what your transaction table or the M2M table is going to do is something like:

                    Where

                    Employee:Position
                    ------------------------
                    1:1
                    1:2
                    2:1
                    2:3
                    3:1
                    3:2
                    4:1

and so on.. This will create the relationship you are looking for.

Thank you so much for your help Riley, I will let you know how it works out! A different way from the paradigm I've operated under for quite a few years. :) Love the help.
