Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Send an SMS from web app

    Hi all,

How would one go about sending an SMS (i.e. text message) from an Alpha web app (not a mobile app - I know there is an action js for mobile apps)?

    Thanks, Richard.

Re: Send an SMS from web app

Ok, on further searching of the forum I found some prior threads... sometimes searching the forum is tricky :)

From what I can see the most common approach is to send an email to an SMS service provider which is easily done in Alpha. If there are any other tips please let me know.

Re: Send an SMS from web app

if your volume is not high ,...
you may consider hosting your own sender using :
alpha UX, phonegap & using the built in alpha's
ACTION JAVASCRIPT - PHONEGAP- SEND SMS - MESSAGE

            use a cheap android phone
purchase the cheapest phone plan ($9.99) with unlimited SMS texting.
set this on on androif only, avoid using iphone ...
the last time i tried, IOS would ask you to confirm if you are sending a message.
while android would not prompt (this is part of either security of the phonegap plug in)
so android would do the job silently ...

Now with the Web-socket feature enabled, i am pretty sure
we can trigger the android phone remotely to send a message.
assuming the android phone is also on the same LAN or wifi.

8 years ago, i bought a usb phone donggle from china ( $39)
add a sim card and had a developer wrote a simple program
such device was installed on a simple pc.
again subscribe to a cheap phone plan ($19 at that time)

The app run on a timer to read for a record or file on the server.
we did not do triggering etc.

As soon as someone add a record to the server's DBF
the sender grab it and send it out as SMS.
and update the table, as "DONE", DATE TIME etc

We only need to provide (the file):
            the phone number
            the mesaage

if the message over 140 characters, we break it into two or more message etc.

we do not care what telephone company name , the receipient subscribed to.

We sent our over 1000 messages per day ...
we had two similar setup as a backup.

previously, we sent out as email ....
using his cell number & the phone company name

            ie : [email protected] etc///

well it works for most, however several phone companies refuse to send out
our message within less than ten seconds. Some got queued for 2-3 days.
causing a great deal of confusion.

I did an experiment with Alpha's UI-Phonegap & SMS sender as decribed above
however, it was three year ago & working really well.

I trust the web-socket (today) or using a simple timer on the phonegap app and UI
            can easily satisfy the requirement.
Thought we can host a small table on the phone to synch with the server's SMS data table.

I try find a moment to create this combine app & share with everyone

By the way ... one problem with above method, is that
we won't be getting acknowledgement if recipient actually received or read our SMS message.

            your comment greatly appreciated.
