Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    conditionally require fields on web form

    How do I make fields on a ux conditionally required? I know how to set the field to be required by using validation rules property on the textbox control, but how do I make it conditionally required? I was thinking maybe something needs to be written in the dialogValidate event that will prevent the form from being submitted, but how do I show the user which field/s are required?

    I was thinking of doing something along the lines of
    Code:
    if(e.dataSubmitted.FK_STATUS_ID <> 9 .and. isblank(e.dataSubmitted.SSN), alert("SSN IS REQUIRED"),"")
    .

    Thank you for your time.

    not that way.

    see the thread you participated.
    there construct the html message and alert will work, data will not be saved.

    you can also do in javascript I am sure.
    if you need that post back I will see if I can show that way.

          Heres what I got, is this correct?

          Code:
          'Conditionally Required Fields
          	if e.dataSubmitted.FK_STATUS_ID <> 9 .and. isblank(e.dataSubmitted.SSN) then
          		dialogValidate.hasError = .t.
          		dialogValidate.errorText = "SSN is Required"
          	else
          		dialogValidate.hasError = .f.
          		dialogValidate.errorText = ""
          	end if

            yes, but
            else
            dialogValidate.hasError = .f.
            dialogValidate.errorText = ""
            probably not needed, won't hurt.

                    no, isblank is desktop only function and e.datasubmitted won't qualify for that, at least in that part.

                      Re: conditionally require fields on web form

                      Unless you need to access SQL data on the server in order to validate data from your client, why would you make a trip to the server?

                      Testing for matching value of 9 for one field and blank for another are not server specific tests... and why anyone would lead you down that path leaves me, once again, confused. So I'll ask.

                      Gandhi... why would you intimate to Ivan that sending him to the server to test for a value of 9 and a blank value is a good idea?

                      Ivan, when you submit your UX... on the client side... you can use .getValue() to get the value of the controls you want and test their values. If they're not correct, do not perform the .submit()... and therefore do not make a trip all the way to the server. These are really bad habits to get into... as Gandhi can testify to.

                      You can also set up client-side validation on each field... and have that data tested during entry... which also gives you error messages in red in close proximity to the control being validated.

                      You can also run...

                      Code:
                      var validationResult = {dialog.object}.clientSideValidateField('yourControlName');
                      to run that client side validation in client-side code just in case your user didn't actually change the control you want to validate.

                      There's lot you can do before even thinking about having to make a trip all the way to the server just to see if a control is not the value 9.

                        I am just correcting him and also indicated that you can do that in javascript. he needed to post back to furnish that.
                        this can be easily done in the client side. since he did not go to that route at all I can not force someone to follow me when I do not know what requirement is there.
                        let me know
                        see post number 2 as well the linked post where is say the same.

                              Re: conditionally require fields on web form

                              Lets pretend we have two fields that we want to test a value for. Lets pretend that in field1 we want to test for a NULL value (we don't want one) and in field 2 we want to make certain that it is a number between and including 1-10
                              You say:
                              when you submit your UX... on the client side... you can use .getValue() to get the value of the controls you want and test their values. If they're not correct, do not perform the .submit()... and therefore do not make a trip all the way to the server.
                              Would one of you guys (david or gandhi) produce that client-side code showing us how it could be accomplished without a server hit? I was considering amending some xbasic code I have that runs on a button click to derail the code, if certain conditions are not met. Not really the same thing but I really enjoy learning from you and Gandhi.
