Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Unlinked Pop-Up Grid in Freeform Area

    Hi-

I hope someone can help with something that is probably pretty easy (but not easy enough for me to figure it out):

I have a grid with a small "linked" grid in the right-side freeform area. Works perfectly.

However, I would also like to ALSO display a read-only grid that is simply a list of available dates and job locations... It isn't "linked" to anything... Essentially, I just want the list to pop-up in that freeform area for users to view.

I can't figure out how to add that small grid, without having a linking field. Is there any way to add the grid to the freeform area without a linked field (see image below for what I'm trying to do)?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Unlinked Pop-Up Grid in Freeform Area

the intention is clear but the wording is not for me.
this is the way i understand that you want to pop up an unrelated grid in the right freeform area. how are you popping it up, by a press of a button?
so the scenario i have is people are looking at the usual grid and other stuff and the press a button to see the available dates and that you want that to appear in the same freeform area just like other grids that hold related information.
    all these are correct?
if so it can be done. please post back to clarify.
    thanks for reading

Re: Unlinked Pop-Up Grid in Freeform Area

      Hi Gandhi-

Thanks for responding. You are always so helpful to people on the Message Board.

I will try to clarify: I really didn't want the grid to be a pop-up. Instead, I want it to always be there when the main grid (I don't want to call it a "parent" because it's not linked). It's just an unrelated grid (which happens to Auto Refresh every minute) that I want to be on the same side as the two "child" grids that are also there.

So I have a "Main" (Parent) grid that occupies the left 2/3 of the screen. There is a "truck" child grid (always there) to the right AND a "customer" child grid (always there), also to the right. My challenge: I'd like the unrelated (standalone) grid to be on the right side as well (if there were a linking field, I'd be able to do it easily, but it's a standalone grid that just has a small list of available jobs and I don't know how to add it).

Not that it matters to you, but all three grids on the right side are very "short" and are limited to less than 2in height.

      Any suggestions would be useful.

Gandhi, I don't know if this is appropriate, but...

You helped me with a "repeating section" issue I was having a couple of months ago. I am having a strange database error and I'd like to brainstorm with you to get your thoughts. Can I "hire" you (at your normal consulting fee) for a very short phone call tomorrow, to go over my issue? I can use some help with a puzzling situation (probably too long/complex to try to explain on the Message Board and I'd be glad to pay for your time).

        Let me know.

            okay that is better.
it is probably difficult to do but i will try little later on to see if a grid can be brought out there. it will definitely need an javascript action i will see if i can trigger that somewhere in the grid. pushing a button is easy.
            let you know.

take a look at this screencast. I did it an easy method for me. I know there is a function {grid.object}.openChildGrid() I did not use it.

The better alternative, would be to use a UX. Setup your panel cards to your liking visually - then embed your components.

I don't think you'd need to work with panel cards. If you use a ux component you can certainly insert embedded objects such as your other grids. You could use containers to lay it all out the way you want.

                      Charles and Josh-

Thanks so much for your advice... I definitely think I'd have been better off designing my system with a UX, instead of with linked grids (FYI, it's a browser-based, office application, not mobile). Unfortunately, I am upgrading an application that was previously designed, so I don't want to revise it at this point. Gandhi's suggestion is working perfectly... and is already in production.

Have a great weekend and thanks so much for your help.
