Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Session Not Found" in Working Preview

    Hi Everyone-

    I'm puzzled by an error I'm getting and I hope you can help. I've used this concept several times before, but, this time, I'm getting an error. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but, right now, I'm stumped:

    In a simple grid that collects "Payments," I set a session variable called "Session.mySessionVariable" in the "on Summary Section Render"... Here's what it looks like:
    getTotal2 = e.summaryValues.AmountReceived.Total
    Session.myNewSessionVariable = getTotal2
    e.javascript = "alert(" + Session.myNewSessionVariable + ");"

    The alert works like a charm and gives me the correct total.

    In my XBasic code, I have these commands:
    Dim PayTotal as n
    Dim JobNum3 as n
    JobNum3 = e._currentRowDataNew.Job_ID
    PayTotal = Session.myNewSessionVariable

    In "debug" mode, when I step to the "PayTotal" command, I get this error:
    Session.jpg

    As I said, I've used this method before without errors, but I'm obviously missing something.

    If you have any thoughts, I'd appreciate them.

    Phil

    the session is in the server, therefore in the preview mode when you debug the session variable is not set.
    you can simply assign a session variable value and run the test (to see all other things are working well)or publish ,if you want to be safe, to your local webroot and test it before going to production.

      may be you have a special need, why you need the session variable to send it to the browser?
      are you keeping the data for some other use?

        Re: "Session Not Found" in XBasic

        Hi Gandhi-

        Well, as it turns out, the simple answer is that I was trying out my code in "Working Preview" instead of "Live Preview" (which is what you were implying in the first response) and that's why the session variable wasn't set. Actually, I realized that when after I was done for the night and turned off my computer (that's what I get for working late at night).

        FYI, the reason I need a session variable is that I've created a "Payments" Pop-up Grid for my application. After the payments are updated/inserted/deleted, I need to update the Parent Grid with the new "total" of all of the payments. I created a session variable for the "total" (as shown in the first group of code) and then I can easily update the "total received" field (with XBasic) in the Parent Grid/UX.

        As always, thank you so much for your help and input. You're terrific.

          very good, but you can also do the update without depending on session variable and xbasic which means a call to the server.
          you could do something like this in the child grid:
          var po = {grid.object}.getParentObject();
          po.setValue(name,value);
          if there is row involved that can be added to the setValue method.

            Hmm... That makes sense. I'm trying to decide which is "better."

            I'll have to think about it. If I do an update to the "parent" grid, the user will have to do another "submit". With the XBasic, the table will get the update when the user submits the child (payments) grid.

            It's probably the same no matter which avenue I choose.

              Re: "Session Not Found" in XBasic

              It's way better to use Gandhi's suggestion than to use a session variable for this purpose. It's really best to limit session variable use to just variables that are initialized at sign-on time and then never changed.

                Re: "Session Not Found" in Working Preview

                The problem with the "set value" command is that I need the "Summary Total" of a field in the grid, rather than a "row" field. I don't know how to capture that without using the "e.SummaryValues.AmountReceived.Total" command and setting it as a session variable.

                  Phil perhaps this thread will help, Ghandi was giving some good advice here as well.
