Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Week Ending function (Pay Period)

    I had an application last week where I needed to calculate the date of the first day of the week that an event occurred it. That expression DATE - DAY_NUMBER(CDOW(DATE)) (provided by GGhandi) works fine.

    But now I have an odd request, and I'm not sure how to modify the above expression (if at all possible) to get this calculation to work.

    In this instance, I need to calculate the date of the ending of a pay period that ends on Thursday each week. (In other words, the start of the pay week is every Friday, and ends on the following Thursday.)

    So for example, in this month of June 2016, whether an employee works on Friday 06/26/16 or Tuesday 06/28/16, it would still fall within the pay week which ends on Thursday 06/30/16.

    Any thoughts as to how I could accomplish this?

    Thanks,
    Rich

    Re: Week Ending function (Pay Period)

    Code:
    dim pay_week as d
    dim pay_day as d
    pay_week = pay_day+(5-day_number(cdow(pay_day)))
    dim dd as d

    dd = {06/26/2016}+(5-day_number(cdow({06/26/2016})))
    ?dd
    = {06/30/2016}

      Thanks for the quick response G.

      I'm a little lost on the "Pay_Date" though. Is that the day the employee worked? If not, where does that date come from?

        Re: Week Ending function (Pay Period)

        pay_date or the day_employee_worked
        i added the example to my code above take a look

        dim dd as d

        dd = {06/26/2016}+(5-day_number(cdow({06/26/2016})))
        ?dd
        = {06/30/2016}
        Code:
        dim date_employee_worked as d
        dim pay_week_of as d
        pay_week_of = date_employee_worked +(5-day_number(cdow(date_employee_worked)))
        to make it clear

        edit:
        while testing I do find some inconstancy,
        I will repost the calculation in a minute

          Re: Week Ending function (Pay Period)

          the above did not work when the employee worked on Friday or Saturday, to correct I changed to a function

          Code:
          FUNCTION pay_week AS D (date_worked AS D )
          	dim d1 as n
          	dim d2 as n = 5
          	d1 = day_number(cdow(date_worked))
          	if d1 > 5 then
          		d2 = 12
          	end if
          	pay_week = date_worked + (d2 - d1)
          END FUNCTION
          if you want one line code
          Code:
          dim date_worked as d
          dim week_of as d
          week_of = date_worked + (if(day_number(cdow(date_worked)) > 5, 12-day_number(cdow(date_worked)),5-day_number(cdow(date_worked))))
