Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CONDITIONALLY Show "New Record" Row in Grid

    This might be a built-in feature that I'm missing, but I could use some help.

    I designed an application that has a Linked Grid, showing the customer information for the address highlighted in the Parent Grid. Currently, the Linked Grid shows existing customer information (if it exists) AND displays a new row to add another customer (or, if no customer information has been added yet for that address, only the blank, new row is shown). It's working properly.

    When I designed the application, my client told me he wanted the ability to have multiple customers for a single address. However, after using the application for several months, they've learned that this is not working for them and is causing confusion on orders placed... They no longer want to have multiple customers for a single address.

    So, I want my Linked Grid to show EITHER:
    1. The existing customer (if it already exists) information that can be Updated/Edited (but NOT add a new record), OR
    2. Only a "new record row" for the user to add the customer information (if none has been added previously for that address)

    Hmm.. That's been a challenge. I can use Grid Properties to display only 1 record that can be edited OR I can make the grid "Add New Record Only", but I haven't found an easy way to get it to display the existing record if it exists OR a "new row" if it doesn't. I've tried setting the grid NOT to allow Insert (no new record row), which displays a "blank" grid if there's no information AND has a Action Button to open a pop-up where the user can enter and Submit the "new" information to the table, but that's a little clumsy for my taste. I prefer that the Linked Grid allows Insert-only, if no information exists and Update Only, if customer information is present.

    I can probably do it easily if there were a method to "Show/Hide" the "new record" row, conditionally... but I haven't figured out if that option even exists... or how to program it.

    I hope there's someone out there who has a suggestion for me.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: CONDITIONALLY Show "New Record" Row in Grid

    here is something for you to try and see if okay with you:
    go to the linked grid and select the update properties and look for new record edit style, change that to on demand.
    then go to client side events and look for canNewRowsShow, select that and enter the following in the javascript on the right hand side,

    Code:
    var rows = {Grid.object}._rowsInGrid;
    if (rows >=1) {
    alert('there are customers already present!, you cannot add anymore');
    return false;
    }
    save it & live preview it, then go to the address live preview it.
    the linked grid will show with no new record row but a button on the left hand side that says new records
    click on that button
    if there is already customer present it will pop up a message and will not add a row, else it will not pop up the message but will add a row.
    tested this code and is working but I did not test it till it fails.
    thanks for reading

      Re: CONDITIONALLY Show "New Record" Row in Grid

      Hi Gandhi-

      THANK YOU so much for responding to my post. That's an excellent way to go about what I want to accomplish (I tested it and it works perfectly, for my application). Until your post, I never understood when I would ever want to use the "CanNewRowsShow" option... I didn't even understand when it applied. With your code, my application is doing exactly what I want. It allows a new record to be created ONLY if there are no other records for that "address ID". PERFECT.

      It's always a delight when I get to work with you.
