Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can I add this "History" field to a record? How to concatenate strings?

    Hi Guys,

Is it possible to as History field of some kind.

I have a table with a field called status. and I need to keep track of the status changes.

I was thinking to add a string field that just says "Status was changed to THIS on DATETIME()"
But then I would need to concatenate another string after the current one when it gets updated again.

So should I create a function that gets the value from current history control, copies it into a variable, and adds the new string to the back of the old string, and then replaces it into the history field and update and save.

Does this sound like something that would work? What function can I use to concatenate or combine the strings?

it will depend on the backend to start with and should be a memo type field like text in mysql or memo in alpha.
it is probably easier to do in the backend itself while updating the status like
    Code:
if updating the status is successful then
update the history field set history field + status + datetime() + new line character
    end if
you could keep the field in the same table or create a history table and keep it separate there.
if the table is separate then
    Code:
if update status is successful then
update the history table set the status field to status field + new value + datetime() + new line character
    end if

Use another table to collect the history data.

if you use separate table one other thing to consider,
the structure of the can be different
id - will be auto increment
        datetime - time stamp
field - status field or any other you want to track
        new value - new value
        changed by - user name

this will give you audit trail
and a grid may be constructed to show the changes. - with search features you got information that you can tackle anytime with out resorting to break down text field to small manageable list.

Oh wow I see I can set a trigger in mySQL to save records changes to another table like Al said.

          Will something like this work

TRIGGER `History` BEFORE UPDATE ON `TABLE` FOR EACH ROW BEGIN
          INSERT INTO history SET
          Notes = NEW.Notes,
          Status = NEW.Status;
          END
