Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get Current User in XBasic

    Hi-

I thought this would be easy, but I haven't had any success getting this to work, so I can use some guidance.

I want the current user's Login ID (e.g. [email protected]) to use in an XBasic Ajax Callback I'm running. I've tried several different ways of doing it without success. In one of my UX components (in the same application), I've successfully captured the Login ID by putting "=session.currUserID" in the "Initial Value" of a hidden field... and it works perfectly.

But, now, I'm working with a Grid, so I can't easily set the initial value of a field, so I'm looking for a better way to do it.

Here's what I tried. In the Server Side "OnGridIntitialize", here's what I added:

Then, I put this in my XBasic and got the error shown.

Actually, I thought that would work, but it obviously did not.

If you have any suggestions about how I could capture the user's login ID for my XBasic, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Phil

    Try this

    Code:
    a5ws_logged_in_user_values(pUser,request,session)

    args.Set("whatUserId",pUser.userid)

Re: Get Current User in XBasic

      Hi Mike-

THANK YOU so much for responding so quickly...AND for such a brilliantly concise answer!

I added the code you suggested and still got an error, BUT that's because I didn't "dim" the pUser veriable ("Dim pUser as p"). Once I did that, it worked PERFECTLY... and is doing exactly what I hoped for.

It is so kind of you (and other Alpha users) to offer your time and expertise to other users. I hope you know how much it's appreciated.

      Thanks again,
      Phil

Re: Get Current User in XBasic

I would use the Context Object methods now.
Web applications that were built before the Context object was available or using now deprecated functions or objects should be updated to use the Context object so that the web application will transition to running under IIS or any other web server technology available in the future.
        http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/a...ty-CurrentUser

        This will work
        Code:
        Context.Security.CurrentUser
Alpha Anywhere v12.4.6.5.2 Build 8867-5691 IIS v10.0 on Windows Server 2019 Std in Hyper-V

          Hi Stephen-

Thanks for writing. I have 2 questions:
          1. Is there a reason why this is better than Mike's suggestion (or is it just another way of doing it?)? Mike's suggestion is working for me.
          2. Where would I put that line? I'm trying to use the User ID in an XBasic command. Do I "dim" a variable "as c = Context.Security.CurrentUser" (e.g. Dim CurUser as c (or p?) = Context.Security.CurrentUser")?

You can use Stephen's suggestions like this...

            Code:
            dim userName as C = Context.Security.CurrentUser
From Alpha: Using the Context object is the preferred way to get information about a request, response, or other context of the server since other objects have been deprecated since version 11. Many of the deprecated objects will not work under IIS.

This "Context" object is new to me...didn't even know it existed until today. If a5ws_logged_in_user_values() has (or is being) been depreciated then I would use the Context method.

              Mike and Stephen-

That makes sense... Thanks for all the help and the explanation... I'll give it a try.

                Phil,

                1. Its not better than what Mike has suggested, just saying that Alpha is recommending it going forward so that we don't run into problems down the road.
                2. As Mike responded, you can dim the result into a variable if that's what you want but you don't necessarily have to. For instance you could have a textbox on a control and simply set it's default value to:
                Code:
                = Context.Security.CurrentUser
That will return the logged in user name to the control.
However, you can use it in an xbasic function, which is what I think you were looking to do. I have an xbasic function where I'm returning the result to a control called RESULT. So, the function contains
                Code:
                e.control.Result = Context.Security.CurrentUser
This particular object doesn't require an argument, or even parentheses for that matter.

                Hope this helps,
                Stephen
