Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown

    Hi,

Using Alpha Anywhere Version 12.2, Build 1839 and Application Server Build 1839-4234.

Application has been running for a long time (+2 years) without problems (thanks!). Database is 3834.69 MB with the main table having 20,872 rows.

Recently users experiencing problems such as data not being returned back into grids. Restarting the Application Server seems to fix the problem for a while. Looking at the error logs :-

    Wed Jul 27 05:49:18 2016
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.

    Execution Stack:
    0#1 evaluate_shared_private(
    0#37 OOhttpdServerClientMIME(ptemp,"AppServerMain")

    Is there a fix?

    Thanks.

      Kevin,

Any changes to the application recently?
What database are you using? What version?
What server? Where? How much RAM?

You're running out of memory. Can you think of any reason why?

There is almost noting to go on here, so it is difficult to make a suggestion to fix this. The answers to David's questions would be a big help.

That said, the majority of memory problems are caused by incorrectly handling uploaded files. See http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...ng-large-files

          Hello David,

Thanks for your reply. In Answer,

No changes recently to the application.
The database is MS SQL Express 2012.
Server is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, hosted.
Memory is 4GB ofwhich 2.53GB currently in use.

          Regards David.

More data added recently? Anything the users are doing which returns ALL data? A lot of data?

Are you returning 20k rows? If so, have you always been returning 20k rows?

Re: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown

Data being added all the time, perhaps 30 - 100 records per day to the 20,000 plus table.

The users would only have access to subset of the data, say 1500 records max.

And nothing has changed recently? No changes to SQL Server... to the Windows Server... to the host environment?

No, nothing changed which makes me thing it's a size problem but used memory is ok, disk space etc. Ok...

I've not read anything that points to a hardware issue. Can you pinpoint user/users and what they're doing at the time of the exception?

Re: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown

Users have access to 2 programs, one to add data to two tables and one to enquire on the data.

The problem appears to be when they use the enquiry but this will never retrieve the whole 20,000 records as there is a filter on the grid which restricts the data to just the users data.

Is there any additional logging that can be enabled on the server to pinpoint the problem?

                      Thanks,
                      Kevin

Re: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown

Starting to see quite a lot of errors now, have attached yesterdays A5XbasicErrorStackLog file.

Is this something to do with downloading the data into Excel?

Regarding the "Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown." message there is plenty of disc spaces and plenty of system memory available.

                        Any help appreciated.

I believe I answered the questions Lenny was interested in yes.

I have also read the post regarding ‘500 Error when uploading large files’.

Regarding uploading files I have a UX mobile form which is used to upload photographs using the standard Image Upload action JavaScript. The images are saved to image datatypes in the SQL database. The maximum filesize is set to 3mb. The program has been in use for almost 3 years now without problems, only recently have the problems started to occur.

                            Regards,

The log pretty clearly identifies the source of the problem as downloading files, as it logs the error as being generated from a call to Response.SendFile(). How large are the files that you are downloading? The code in the log is loading the file in to memory, then duplicating it in memory in order to convert it to UTF8. This means you need at least twice the size of the file available as unfragmented free memory accessible by the Alpha process.
