Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    offline map

    Hi,
I have a customer who needs to geo-locate customers.
I made the app and it working ok, Now he needs the map to be offline.
Is there a way to have google map offline?

    Thank you,

    Re: offline map

What kind of function does he need from the map? It almost sounds like he is asking the impossible, you cannot navigate using google maps without being connected to a satellite through wifi or your mobile data. This isnt an Alpha issue its inherent in the request to google.

        Re: offline map

Google Maps does offer a way to save the "location" for offline use as an offline map and I would recommend that to your customer, it allows you to download locations for offline use.
That would happen after they use your application to get the address and launch google maps via a link - then in Google maps look at the menu and you will see "Download offline area"

This should be more than sufficient, and satisfy your customers needs while allowing you to develop the application!

Other than that I would still go with NO as the answer since to target an area you'll need to download it from somewhere to begin with (Google, Bing, Apple?) save it and then either display it as an image or save the way points and load them back into a mapping program. You can save KMZ files, Load them etc but again Google has already done all of the work for you!

Cheers and I hope that helps! Its all I got!

          Re: offline map

If you want to integrate Google Maps within Alpha utilizing the api then, from what I read, Google Maps does not allowing caching or storing their content for offline use.

OpenStreetMap has a very nice javascript api and does address (get it??? address??? funny) offline use. But... you're into a whole other mapping eco-system.

              Hahaha, good one!

Anyways, as far as the map that would open up via Alpha I don't think thats the best use of google maps in your case. Sure it works as expected but the Google Maps app itself is certainly more powerful and will contain what you want - so in short order why not make a link from the address - then it will open up in the mapping application of their choice (goggle maps for example) and then your custoemr will have the functionality they want.

In a grid view I use a hyper link to open an a5w page, static HTML page, URL, or a PDF doc...then I use a supercontrol MAP to geocode and get the link - open TARGET is a browser window.

This allows for my "web application" to now open a mapping app.

              On the other hand...

If it is in a UX - and I am loading markers via a button firing a Google Map Method to load them, in the Marker Detail I use
              Code:
              <font size="5"><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q= {js_escape(ds.data("Location"))}">MAP LINK</a>
              </font></b>
              as part of the details

Now "Location" has the actual address to be mapped - this puts a nifty MAP LINK to click on nice and large and this works super for me.

              Hope that helps!

              ~Cheers
