Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Pixels vs Inches

    Hi All...

Question...I need to size things to line up and I've been nudging things around using pixels. Then I got to thinking...pixel sizes change per monitor correct? If so that means my stuff isn't going to line up the same form screen to screen. If not then I'm good.

If so then I assume I should us a unit of measure like inches as that should not change per monitor.

Thanks...sorry if this has been addressed already.

Could you be more specific about what you need to do? Line up... how? In what way?

      Re: Pixels vs Inches

      Sure...couple of things...

I have some containers and frames that the tops of them don't line up. To make them line up I used the Frame Begin Properties and added 4px about a couple of them so the frames didn't zig zag across the screen. I also want some frames to be a set size so that they line. So I set a Frame pane style height and width using pixels. Looks clean on my monitors but if I look on a different screen my concern is that the pixel will be a different size and shift the containers and frames.

I think I'd need a sample of a few containers and frames using your method to align stuff to really "see" what the potential issue could be. I'm working with 2 monitors, with different ppi.

Just a follow up...I asked a friend of mine who is web designer and he said that since pixel density changes from monitor to monitor I should try to use inches as it is a constant unit of measure. If I use pixels to space objects on the screen they will float from screen to screen due to the different densities.

I believe it's a different issue than using either px or in... but it sounds as though you've got it sorted.

All units of measurement can only be in relation to the screen size, even taking into account pixel density. I always position relative to the left side of the screen, looking at it from the bigger picture. All screens have a left side, lol.

SO with that being said the next step would be determining when the right side ends, since that will always vary and be the hurdle - assuming that a vertical issue is never a problem (people don't seem to mind scrolling downward unless its because the last button they need to see is blocked by 60% or more) - Plan on your widths as being the hurdle.

In a perfect world - it's all so very responsive, in fact so much that you don't even need to have this conversation. If Alpha could address that in any grid or UX with a checkbox that would be truly impressive!
The reality is that you have to MAKE it responsive. Percentage is in my opinion the most reliable.
