Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Validate sections of a UX at different times

I have a UX with fields separated into 2 sections - section one and section two. All fields are required to have a value, so validation rules have been set on all fields.

A user will complete section one of the UX, then at a later time a different user will complete section two of the same UX.

When the user completes section one I only need to validate section one and I don't want validation errors for section two. Is this possible?

(Note, I know this can be done using the tab control genie style but that's not the UX design I'm after)

    Thanks.

How is validation set up? Are you actually getting validation errors in the 2nd Section... if the user doesn't enter that section?

I wouldn't involve validation rules for the 2nd section, in this case. If the 1st section always needs validation then that's fine, use Validation Rules.

Validate the 2nd section in whatever action the user must take in order to complete the process... ie a submit button. With JS, grab the data from each control and ensure it is valid. If it's not valid then send out a message.

You can use this method to run the Validation Rules on controls which have not been entered... client-side.

    Code:
    var validationResult={dialog.object}.clientSideValidateField('text1',1,1);
Have a look here for discussions on validations.

Re: Validate sections of a UX at different times

Validation is setup at the field level, so by checking the "Validation Rules" property then in the validation properties checking the "Require Value" property. In my case almost all fields in section 1 and section 2 are required and therefore I am getting validation errors in section 2 as expected when the UX is submitted after completing section 1.

I don't see {dialog.object}.clientSideValidateField() in the list of available methods but I gave it a go and it appears to force the validation of the nominated field which might come in handy, thanks for that.

I think I will do as you suggest, validate section 1 using Validation Rules, then write JS to validate section 2.

      Thanks David.

You can play with the UX properties... "Only validate edited fields" and "Only validate fields whose values were changed" to see what might work out best for you.

A user will complete section one of the UX, then at a later time a different user will complete section two of the same UX.
will the user #1 save the data then somehow the user #2 will bring the ux back, then will fill in the data ( like a grid feeding the ux), and how would they know that ux needs completing?
so when the user #1 submits you don't want to see the error checking enabled for the section 2 which will not be active yet, correct?

Re: Validate sections of a UX at different times

Posting this update in case it helps others.

In my case sections 1 and sections 2 of the UX are completed by users in different security groups.

            eg
Section 1 user is a member of security group "normal user"
Section 2 user is a member of security group "manager"

By applying a security group of "manager" to section 2, this section isn't rendered when a "normal user" opens the UX. Therefore the validation for section 2 can't fire. This solves my conundrum at least.

            Regards, Richard.

              Hi Govindan,

"when the user #1 submits you don't want to see the error checking enabled for the section 2 which will not be active yet, correct?"

              Yes that is correct.
