Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to: convert dbf to MySQL and then replace MySQL test data with live data

    I'm so frustrated right now.

I have a simple 2 table DBF WEB application which I converted to use a MySQL back end.
I successfully converted the DBF to MySQL, ( can't say I remember how), and converted the WEB
app to run using MySQL. I have everything running fine using the test data. I was able to upload
the whole application with the test data to my server for testing and everything is working.

Now I'm trying to take the current DBF data, convert it to MySQL, and upload it to my server.
Everything I try doesn't work. I've tried using WorkBench and Toad and just moving files. Is
there an easy way to do this? I've googled this and when I tried to do yotube examples,
I get errors. Plus, my primary key field is not auto-increment and I can't make it auto-increment.

One way to do this is with Xbasic. Generally:

    - Truncate the MySQL table
    - Append the data from the DBF to the MySQL table.

The append method can take different forms, but because Xbasic can work so well with both DBF and SQL back ends, this can be a convenient solution.

In MS SQL with large tables, the bulk insert is nice. I'm not sure if there's a similar method for MySQL. Otherwise simply fetching through the DBF and creating an Insert for each record is pretty straight-forward.

Caution - this one-by-one record method *can* be slow if you have a large number of records.

Another way, but not quite as slick is to export records to csv and import csv to MySQL tables.

I use sqlyog for this, but most any tool can easily do this. Done all the time on web apps using MySQL.

          I'm working on something similar.

My site works using DBF tables, but I want to convert it to MySQL.

Do I need to create the tables in MySQL with all the field names, etc? I have many tables with many fields, so I hope there's an easier method.

          Thanks,

          Rob

Re: How to: convert dbf to MySQL and then replace MySQL test data with live data

You still need to do a bunch of work, but I start with this:

            From the desktop control panel:

            File
            Export Data
            Remote database using AlphaDAO
            OK
Open Export builder directly if asked
            Choose connection string

Follow your nose on the rest.

You might, at this stage, limit the export table to, say, 10 records. If you have large tables, a full import this takes a very very long time. But with 10 records, you get a SQL table with field names, a bit of test data.

There are complicators. An Alpha logical field should be converted to a bit or tinyint (in MS SQL at least - been a while since I've used MySQL). Memo fields/files need special treatment. And more.

With this much started, you can then build import routines per my earlier message on this thread to import your data as you build and test.

              Steve,

Thanks for taking time to reply! Right after I submitted my quesiton, I found a similar entry you made in response to the same question from someone else. I'll definitely give it a try. I believe you are the person who made the system to monitor animal health, somewhere down in FL, yes?

              Thanks,

I was in FL for a while, but we serve customers world-wide.
