The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Website hangs when loading on new Win2012 server

    Hello! I'm a "server novice" but have managed to setup a new remote VPS with Win 2012, install IIS, MySQL and the A5 App Server for IIS, and successfully direct publish my first site from within the A5 development environment. However, when I try to load the site, either from the A5 publish page or by typing the URL in a browser, it just says "Loading...", shows a spinning wait icon, and does nothing else. At this point, I'm not sure where to even look for clues as to what might be happening. Could it be a port issue? Could it be that the A5 for IIS server is not running? Are there log files on the server that might give me a clue? In the IIS Manager on the server, I see all of the expected icons from the A5/IIS install, but don't see an A5 process running. Should I see that? Also, I don't see where I can even invoke the A5 for IIS server app to modify configuration settings, such as the port it might be using. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Tom,

    Have you tried recycling the application pool in IIS manager? I often see the spinning icon after publishing to the IIS server and this usually solves it for me.

      Thanks for your input, Stephen, but I tried to recycle the app pool just now and, unfortunately, it didn't change anything...still getting the wait icon when trying to load the website...

        Do not know if you already have but you should just first check that your server works. So put in the root simple file for example test.html (<p>Online...</p>). If you get the output you know IIS is working. Then try simple a5w.page test.a5w (<%a5 ? "Online..." ?>).

        Then you can try to publish something simple from developer to IIS and isolate little by little the problem you seem to have.

          Ken, thanks for your reply! I created a test.html file as you suggested and if I run it directly by clicking on the filename in File Explorer on the server, IE displays it with no problem. However, if I try running it by typing "mywebsite.com/test.html" as the URL in IE, it just goes into the perpetual wait state. I then created the sample a5w page you suggested. If I click on it in File Explorer, surprisingly I get a "View Downloads" window, as if this file has just been downloaded from another source. If I type the "mywebsite.com/test.a5w" as the URL, IE again just goes into that perpetual wait state. So, does that tell me IIS is not working for some reason? Thanks again for any ideas you may have! - Tom

            what happens is you type http://localhost/test.html or http://localhost/test.html:80 ?

              Do tests again using your servers IE and address http://127.0.0.1/test.html and.../test.a5w. If these tests works that tells that IIS works fine.
              Then the problem is that your port 80 is not open for outside traffic. Open port in Windows firewall. You can test this using for example in command line in your own computer ping xx.xx.xx.xx (your server ip address) You can test first for example ping alphasoftware.com then you can see how the result should look.

              When you get these previous tests working then you can test in your own computers browser http://yourserver.com/test.html if that is not working then your dns A record do not point to your servers IP. Add two A record to your DNS(yourserver.com and www.yourserver.com)

                Hello, Ken, and thanks again for your help! I did what you suggested and through that discovered the Alpha Server for IIS was not responding. I'm not sure why exactly, but I found that the new Godaddy VPS has Plesk installed in order to manage the server. Because I used Plesk to add the website to IIS, there must have been some port conflict or other issue that did not allow A5 to work properly. So, in IIS Manager I removed all of the folders and site records Plesk had created and manually added the site folder back. I also setup a new folder for my site under inetpub instead of using the location and structure Plesk had created. After doing that, I was able to republish to the new folder and everything now works fine! The only other issue I had was making sure all of the MySQL modules matched the "Membership Provider Version" in the A5 publish dialog. This was an interesting learning process, very much like what I've experienced so far as an A5 newbie...a lot of trial and error before feeling the excitement of success. But, the more I use A5 the more I see what a powerful tool it is. Without it (and without help from fine people like yourself), I never could have reached this point in such a short amount of time!
