Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Place caret at a particular character in a text box control

    Here's the scenario: a simple UX containing a text box (TEXT1) and a button (BUTTON_1). The default value in the textbox is, "Hello, name is [Scott]"

    Ideally, I would like the button to have an onclick event whereby the cursor (aka. the caret) is positioned just before the first bracket, allowing the user to more easily select the braceted text. Of course, an even better solution would be if the onclick event could just highlight the bracketed text.

    Any ideas (javascript preferred)?

    Thanks!

    How about this code for the button's onClick:

    Code:
    var input = document.getElementById('DLG1.V.R1.TEXTBOX1');
    input.selectionStart = 15;
    input.selectionEnd = 22;
    input.focus();
    Assuming that your textbox has the ID of DLG1.V.R1.TEXTBOX1 (do a view source in Working Preview and look for the ID of your textbox)

      Thanks Jeff. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work. It just moves the caret to the end of the text.

        Worked for me in Working Preview (using both Chrome and IE). With Live Preview, it worked with IE and Firefox but not Chrome. I didn't try making it a PhoneGap app.
        I guess it needs to be tweaked some.

          Jeff - sorry about that. It works just fine. I had the ID wrong. Thanks!

            Re: Place caret at a particular character in a text box control

            In the spirit of full documentation (and to help others experiencing a similar issue), here is the enhanced code I used (based on Jeff's premise above):

            Code:
            var input = document.getElementById('DLG1.V.R1.TEXT1');

            var str = {dialog.object}.getValue('TEXT1');
            var start = str.indexOf("[");
            var end = str.indexOf("]");

            input.selectionStart = start
            input.selectionEnd = end+1
            input.focus();

              Re: Place caret at a particular character in a text box control

              UPDATE: I just published and have discovered that it does not work in IE, Edge OR Chrome. Jeff, as you point out, it works in Working Preview mode.

              Anyone have any ideas?

                var input = document.getElementById('DLG1.V.R1.TEXT1');
                you have hard coded the input element and when you publish it won't be found. you should use alias so it gets translated properly.
                var input = document.getElementById('{dialog.ComponentName}.V.R1.TEXT1');

                also please note while the javascript need not end in ";" it is better to end with that.
                input.selectionStart = start;
                input.selectionEnd = end+1;
                also may i suggest instead,
                Code:
                input.selectionStart = start + 1;
                input.selectionEnd = end;

                or just one line as
                input.setSelectionRange(start+1, end);
                so the name is highlighted and can be repeatedly changed if one so desires.
                thanks for reading
