Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Revised: IIS Application Server Difficulties. Will gladly pay for some help!

I can really use some help... I need someone from the Alpha Community to come to the rescue.

I have written several applications that I host on my own server. The server has been great for me, for quite some time, but I want my customers to get an even greater performance from my applications. Toward that end, I have increased my company internet speed and purchased and configured a new server (see specs below) to host the applications.
    Server.jpg
During my last conversations with the Alpha engineers, they strongly suggested using the IIS Application Server, instead the traditional Application Server (added performance and throughput. At least, that is what they tell me). That is where I need some help!

Just when I think I actually know something, the technology changes! I have followed the IIS installation guide and all of the tips, but I am not able to get the server working or to successfully publish to it. Equally important, I want to improve my expertise with this new server system, so that I can maximize the performance of my apps.

So, that is where you come in! I need some help learning the IIS Application Server Technology and to get my server running properly. If you are familiar with the IIS Server application and can mentor me about what I am doing wrong (and any other tips or tricks you want to share), I would love to work with you. I fully expect to pay you for your time and knowledge (FYI, I tried to purchase a mentoring block from Alpha, but their new system requires a 5-hour block. Ouch! And I have to use the full 5 hours within 6 months. Ouch! Ouch! Considering that I am in this mess because of their VERY limited documentation, I think that is an unreasonable way to treat a charter subscriber... but I digress). I am thinking that I will need only 1 or 2 hours, maximum (I have already installed the software onto the server and created a publishing profile. It just is not working correctly. I think I am just missing a few steps).

I hope there's someone out there who would like to work with me on this (and earn some money in the process). You can respond directly to this post (or you can e-mail to [email protected]).

I am looking forward to hearing from you and to working with you.

    Phil

It could be something simple. What's the error you're getting? Or what doesn't work?

Hi David: Thanks so much for writing. It has been a long night as I've tried to get something published. Here's where it stands: I created the "Simple" 1-page sample as directed in the the Alpha "IIS Quick Start Guide". When I try to publish, here is the error I get:
      IIS Error.jpg
In addition, I have attached the Trace Log file (essentially, it says what the error message says).

If you have any thoughts, I would appreciate them.

Thank you again for taking the time to write.

Re: Revised: IIS Application Server Difficulties. Will gladly pay for some help!

        Phil,

The log is suggesting that the it can not connect to your server 'https://192.168.1.160:8172/msdeploy.axd' as 'Administrator'. it also states that it could not connect to the remote computer ("192.168.1.160"). It suggests to ensure that Web Deploy is installed in IIS and that the required process ("Web Management Service") is started.

As a guess straight off the bat i would change your address to use to https://192.168.1.160, (over port 443) if you can i would assign a Public Domain name that points to your server ip (although not required). This method should then allow msdeploy.axd to be found on the remote server as you should just be able to point to the server and IIS should handle the incoming request.

Couple of things i would do if the above does not solve your issue and I have done in the past as I have seen this message when publishing my applications into IIS.

        1) Ensure you have opened Alpha Anywhere Developer Program as an Administrator
        2) Ensure that Web Deploy is installed in IIS
        3) Ensure you have restarted the server although not required is always good practice
        4) Ensure that you firewall is allowing incoming connections into the server on port 443 or 80 or any other port required
        5) Do ensure the external IP address is mapped to an internal ip address of your server
        6) Create a new site and create a sample HTML file and run it to ensure IIS serves up a page. (This actually checks that IIS is working outside of the AA environment)
        7) On your Server install a copy of Alpha Anywhere Developer Program and publish it locally to IIS. Test and Run this site to ensure that IIS AA works correctly. Optionally copy the published files from you dev machine to the server manually and place in the default path of you test site you created in step 3 above.
        8) Ensure and double check that your username and password in the publishing profile are correct

In terms of speed of IIS compared to the traditional server, IIS avoids the need to manage a reverse proxy inside one server to realise the performance of your server cores. IIS will do a better job of managing the available resources and you have the ability to chain together other servers in a Web farm for scalability above one server. I will note though that the use of the resources of the server are limited and depend on you license in order to use the available cores on the machine which i believe is upto 4 or 8 cores depending on your license of IIS you paid for. So your new system to max out performance would need to be virtualized and additional AA IIS server licenses purchased.

I host my IIS's inside EC2 instances on AWS. IIS's greatest advantage over the traditional server is ability to have multiply web apps on one server.

Hope the above will help solve you issue if not let me know and we can arrange to have a chat.

Hold on a second. The IP address you list is an internal LAN IP and therefore only accessible if it's on the same internal network. This server, or using that IP, is not accessible from the outside world.

Where is your server in relation to your Alpha Developer machine?

            Hi Alex and David-

First of all, I want to thank you for spending your valuable time to try and help. The Alpha community is so generous to do this for other users. I hope you know how much we appreciate it. Second, I'm sorry for taking so long to respond... I've been trying MANY different avenues to get the new IIS Server up and running... Here's my update:

After several hours of struggle, I'm happy to say that "I'm getting close." I am able to access the new server. I started from scratch, using Alpha's IIS 'Quick Start" Guide. That was helpful. Ultimately, my greatest challenge was dealing with the SQL Security. My SQL Server 2016 Application would not let me connect when setting up the publishing profile. Ultimately, I DID get it to work, Here's what was happening (and is STILL happening). When I create the profile and try to connect to the SQL Server (default instance), I get this error:
            RefreshError.jpg.

This drove me crazy for quite some time. I tried connecting every possible way (with IP Address, NetBios Name, with and without the Instance Name added, etc.), but always got the "Driver has not been initialized..." error). Ultimately, I resolved the problem by skipping that "Refresh" entirely. Then, I created a SQL Server User (instead of "Windows Authentication"). Finally, when I clicked "Refresh" at the Database prompt, all of the databases appeeared and I could select the one I want (I'd like to solve the "Driver has not been initialized..." error, but I'm passed that now).

I am able to completely publish and use the "Simple IIS" in the "getting started" guide.

Then, came the big test: Migrate a real application! I was able to migrate one of my applications and its security roles and users. The application can be accessed from with OR outside my network. The only issue I'm currently having is that the application won't let me alter ANY of the tables (for this application, I'm using simple MS Access Tables). When I try to make any changes, I get this error:
            DBUpdateError.jpg

I am using the same database with the same tables that I'm using, in production, on Alpha's Standard Application Server (AND, my profile has the correct Alpha DAO Connection String to the Access Tables), so I don't understand why I'm having the problem. That's what I'll be working on tonight... If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate them. If that were overcome, I believe I'd be able to move all of my applications to my new server.

I hope this information is helpful to others who are having issues. I certainly appreciate those who have offered help to get me this far.
