Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Fire Truck CheckSheet Software

    Hey Ya'll,

    Overview
I'm a network and Systems Administrator for a Fire Department, one of the biggest problems Fire Departments have is Daily Apparatus check sheets and these check-sheets vary from truck to truck and often changes because the equipment on the truck does. So inherently when you're going to have 50 or so trucks listed I need to be able to let the maintenance officer take care of that which means more work on my end in the front. Here's how i've got the database setup.

    Database Setup
So there's a table that is titled Apparatus_Checks and then there's a Table that is Apparatus_Checks_Results, which is a list of drop down results and there is a relationship between Apparatus_Checks and Apparatus_Checks_Results. Upon submission of the form the results of this are submitted into a table called Apparatus_CheckSheet_Results which has many columns two of which are Apparatus_Checks_ID and Apparatus_Checks_Result_ID. There's also a table that is Apparatus_CheckSheet_MetaData which is the information about the Check Sheet (Name, Date, Apparatus) and the table Apparatus_CheckSheet_Results has a column for this.

I'm just trying to get some guidance on where to start for this. Any help is much appreciated!

    Re: Fire Truck CheckSheet Software

The mind boggles. There are many things you can do - it depends on what you are really looking for.

For instance, you could write an app that would allow your firefighters to carry around an ipad. They could use the ipad to pull up the truck they are checking and click checkboxes on every system they check.

Or, if they are still using pencil and paper for the checklist, you may just need a screen where they say that they have checked a particular vehicle on a particular day.

You could even create the paper checklist as a report in the system so the checklist has relevant data on it. (Such as the truck ID and the date.)

    Or anything in between.

Other than that, some more specifics about what you are looking for would be VERY helpful ...

      Re: Fire Truck CheckSheet Software

Apologies for being extremely general, basically we're looking to have it submitted in a database so we can query it in the future.

But here's how i'm thinking for it to work, we have Microsoft Surfaces in the trucks.

They would pull up the app/website and log in. Then they would see a list of trucks and they would click the truck. They will be then be prompted for other information (badge #, date, other various information). Upon submitting that they will be taken to the check sheet where it will have the check name and the drop down; and that's it. But the checks are filtered by the ID of the truck they selected. (In the future and as i learn more about alpha we would like for it to open work orders when necessary.

All that is doable, but I can't do it for you on the forum. Start by learning a bit about Alpha - maybe watch the beginners videos. If you want someone to mentor you or walk you through some of it, I'd be glad to help - just private message me.

          Re: Fire Truck CheckSheet Software

Alpha created some sample apps and a couple are similar to what you're wanting to do. Although I don't agree with the methodology behind the samples, they are a great starting point for concepts and ideas. Have a look here... http://www.alphasoftware.com/mobile-...t/sample-apps/

Dan is currently building something great, I sure if you contact Morris or Richard they will be glad to share the idea with you.

Basically, each inspection would be saved as a JSON record in a database, Dan is in the process of refining it by the end of the year.

Hum, storing the data in JSON format sounds a bit like just storing it in a NoSQL database. Before going that route, try a Google search on "why not use NoSQL". Here's a particularly long case study article: http://www.sarahmei.com/blog/2013/11...r-use-mongodb/

              Robert,
The company I work for sells hosted subscriptions to an AlphaAnywhere Web app that we wrote that has parallel features to what you are probably looking to do. The main difference is that we currently have the app setup to track the daily training / skill performance for new employees, not the daily performance/status of vehicles. The app is used by police, 9-1-1 call centers and fire departments. Please look for a private message under the "Notifications" area at the top of this page; I will put more info in that.

                Re: Fire Truck CheckSheet Software

You are saving your data as a string in SQL many SQL databases have JSON fields. JSON is very flexible very readable and widely understood.
If you go the go with pure SQL then EAV is your option. Good luck if you chose EAV.
